Brief Program Description/Goals

The purpose of this program is to give students who are already in a federal or state government approved apprenticeship program a chance for a much higher degree of job placement opportunities and economic security.

What Is Unique About The Program

It combines learning in the classroom and on the job. Get paid while you learn, with pay increases at regular intervals.

Program Prerequisites
  • Students must be accepted into the State of Hawai‘i or Federally approved Apprenticeship Program.
  • PHNSY:
    • Placement in ENG 100
    • Placement in Math 24/50
  • NAVFAC:
    • A minimum of 640 hours of supervised work experience
    • Recommended Prep: Placement in ENG 22/60 or ESL 23; and MATH 50

Itemized Estimate of Educational Costs

  • Tuition based on total credits taken.
  • Books/tools/equipment/ are dependent upon the specific apprenticeship program.

Upon successful completion of the PHNSY Apprentice Training Program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to work effectively with people.
  • Make clear and effective presentations to individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic safety and health principles, techniques, regulations, professional guidelines, factors of causation, techniques of investigation and reporting, and environment effects of hazards.
  • Demonstrate basic mechanical drawing skills to communicate ideas graphically to others through the use of sketches and rough drawings and use various types of blueprints to perform work-related functions.
  • Apply technical math skills to analyze and solve work-related problems (algebraic and geometric skills needed in working with formulas and simple equations, geometric figures, areas, volumes, proportions, and the metric system of measurement) and, solve shop problems by using trigonometry.
  • Apply technical writing skills to conduct research and create reports related to work documents and other shipyard related tasks (proposals, progress reports, letters, memos, resumes).
  • Apply basic laws of physics to solve work-related problems.
  • Apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to perform work duties on the waterfront.

APTR 193V - Cooperative Education (1-6)

  • Instructor approval required.

This course provides students with an opportunity to gain work experience related to the program major. This course was created according to an agreement between the Department of Navy and Honolulu CC for students under the SCEP Program through the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Students must be recommended by the work supervisor in order to enroll. Students may enroll 4 times for a maximum of 16 credits.

  • Job Placement. The student will obtain a position with a company that is related to his/her major and perform a minimum of 75 hours per semester for each credit. This Learning Outcome will be assessed by:
    • Cooperative Education Student Application Form
    • Resume, Cover letter and list of potential employers
    • Cooperative Education Agreement
  • Personal Assessment. The student will demonstrate an understanding of personal skills with an awareness of the impact of abilities and skills on career development and academic achievement. This learning outcome will be assessed by:
    • Mid Term Report
    • Student Evaluation of Cooperative Education Experience
    • Learning Outcome Paper(s}
  • Job Performance. As part of a team, the student will perform all duties required at the cooperative education work site, demonstrating positive work habits and using appropriate procedures, tools and equipment, consistent with all applicable standards and OSHA regulations. This Learning Outcome will be assessed by:
    • Student Time Sheet
    • Employment Supervisor's Evaluation of Cooperative Education
