Module 2

How Does this Page Benefit You?

Technology is an important part of online learning. In this module, you will learn about the different types of hardware and software needed for online learning success. This module has quite a bit of content, so feel free to take breaks and return as many times as you'd like.

Module completion time: 1 hr.

You Will Also:

        • Learn more about Laulima and how to use this system
        • Familiarize yourself with using UH Gmail
        • Understand the different types of technology required for successful completion of an online course
        • Increase your knowledge of campus resources

PART A: UH GMAIL

Getting Started

Your UH Gmail address is your official communication channel with the University system. It is critical that you receive the messages sent to you at your @hawaii.edu address, as your instructors will likely use it to contact you. In this tutorial, you’ll be using your UH username and password to log in to the web interface for Google@UH email. If you choose, you will be forwarding that mail to another address and learning how the “conversation view” works.

Its also important to note that all messages and alerts from Laulima, the UH system for online courses, are sent to your hawaii.edu account. If you’re not receiving UH email, either by checking it directly or by forwarding to a preferred email address, you are likely to miss critical information.

PART B: LAULIMA

Getting Started

Laulima is the learning management system (LMS) of the UH system. Every course (both face-to-face and online) in the UH system automatically has a Laulima site associated with it. However, it is an instructor’s choice how much they use Laulima in their course, if at all.

In this tutorial, you will be referred to materials referencing Laulima. Many instructors use Laulima exclusively to provide information (i.e. syllabus, announcements, readings, and exams) to their students. A thorough understanding of how to navigate Laulima and use its tools will help you be successful in your UH courses. Check out the video below for more helpful information on using Laulima.

PART C: USING GOOGLE DRIVE

Getting Started

Google Drive is a file storage developed by Google. Google Drive allows users to store files on their accounts and share files. Google Drive also offers an office suite similar to Microsoft. These tools are very helpful to online learners, which includes: Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, an office suite. All files created and edited through the office suite are saved in Google Drive. To learn more about Google Drive, especially Google Docs and Google Slides, check out the video below.

PART D: COMPUTER HARDWARE

Getting Started

A computer is an essential part of online learning. A computer is made up a collection of elements that are considered computer hardware. Computer input devices are additional hardware components that can help to enhance your experience as an online learner, including having access to computers and microphones for live conversations with your instructor, classmates, or other faculty/staff on campus. If you'd like to learn more about computer hardware, including input devices, please watch the video below.
