1. March and spring activities were discusses. The following activities
are either scheduled or planning to be scheduled for the remainder of the
Spring Semester:

a. Jerry summarized the activities of the Faculty Professional Development
Day coming up this Friday. Breakfast will begin at 8:00, Ramsey will
welcome the faculty and hold a Town Meeting at 9:00, breakout workshops
will begin at 10:00, mini open houses around the campus will begin at
11:00 and optional Teacher Talking Brown Bags Sessions will be held at
noon. Signup sheets will be available at breakfast.

b. Teachers Talking Seminar on Disruptive Students, Classroom Management
and the Student Conduct Code, 3/18

c. The Information Technology Center is still discussing topics for
computer workshops that will be delivered this spring.

d. The Pacific Asian Affairs Council is still waiting for funding for this
year. They did present a very successful Feng Shui workshop last month.
If their funding comes in there is a possibility of additional workshops
with them co-sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, the Staff
Development Committee and the Student Life and Development Office.

e. Jess gave a report on the progress of the Stew Cookoff planning. The
planning process is progressing very well. 75 aprons were ordered and 77
have arrived. Jess showed a sample to the committee. 43 have already
been sold. Jess and Grace are gathering stoves for the stew cooks and
Grace is preparing a registration form for the cook entries. The judges
have been arranged and the facility requests have been submitted and
approved. Leon asked how may cook entries there will be, and the number
is unknown at this time.

f. The committee is still committed to sponsoring an end-of-year party
after graduation. Planning and additional discussion on this will take
place after the Stew Cookoff is over.

g. Jerry stated that he has discussed with Marcia Roberts-Deutsch, the HCC
Writing Intensive Coordinator, offering a WI/Student Writing workshop this
spring. Faculty Development has co-sponsored such a workshop the past two
springs. Dr. Tom Hilgers, Director, UHM Writing Program, will possibly be
a guest presenter at the workshop.

h. Lei Lani suggested co-sponsoring a discussion forum for faculty, staff
and students should the U.S. go to war before the end of the semester.

2. The spring issue of the Faculty Development Newsletter is nearly
complete. Lei Lani submitted a lead article for the newsletter which
Jerry will include. Lei Lani will do a final edit of the newsletter
before it is issued.

3. End of the year feedback letter: Jerry informed all members that an end
of the year report is required and asked each to be thinking about writing
a letter reflecting on the activities of the committee this year and ideas
for improvement next year. These letters will be due in May and included
in the end of the year report.

4. Professional Development Awards: $9050 was left from the $10,000 given
to the faculty for professional development this year. The committee
chose two colleagues to attend this summer's Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar
and distributed the remaining funds to the eligible faculty who submitted
applications. For specific details on the distribution of these funds,
contact the Faculty Development Coordinator.
