FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING March 5, 2003 3:30 pm - Library Study Room 113 MINUTES Attending: Jess Aki, Jerry Cerny, Leon Florendo, Theron Craig, Lei Lani Hinds, Xin Li, Allen Takeishi 1. The following handouts were distributed; Agenda Calendar of March Faculty Development Activities Disruptive Student Teacher Talking Seminar Flyer Old Business 1. The February Committee minutes were approved. New Business 1. March and spring activities were discusses. The following activities are either scheduled or planning to be scheduled for the remainder of the Spring Semester: a. Jerry summarized the activities of the Faculty Professional Development Day coming up this Friday. Breakfast will begin at 8:00, Ramsey will welcome the faculty and hold a Town Meeting at 9:00, breakout workshops will begin at 10:00, mini open houses around the campus will begin at 11:00 and optional Teacher Talking Brown Bags Sessions will be held at noon. Signup sheets will be available at breakfast. b. Teachers Talking Seminar on Disruptive Students, Classroom Management and the Student Conduct Code, 3/18 c. The Information Technology Center is still discussing topics for computer workshops that will be delivered this spring. d. The Pacific Asian Affairs Council is still waiting for funding for this year. They did present a very successful Feng Shui workshop last month. If their funding comes in there is a possibility of additional workshops with them co-sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, the Staff Development Committee and the Student Life and Development Office. e. Jess gave a report on the progress of the Stew Cookoff planning. The planning process is progressing very well. 75 aprons were ordered and 77 have arrived. Jess showed a sample to the committee. 43 have already been sold. Jess and Grace are gathering stoves for the stew cooks and Grace is preparing a registration form for the cook entries. The judges have been arranged and the facility requests have been submitted and approved. Leon asked how may cook entries there will be, and the number is unknown at this time. f. The committee is still committed to sponsoring an end-of-year party after graduation. Planning and additional discussion on this will take place after the Stew Cookoff is over. g. Jerry stated that he has discussed with Marcia Roberts-Deutsch, the HCC Writing Intensive Coordinator, offering a WI/Student Writing workshop this spring. Faculty Development has co-sponsored such a workshop the past two springs. Dr. Tom Hilgers, Director, UHM Writing Program, will possibly be a guest presenter at the workshop. h. Lei Lani suggested co-sponsoring a discussion forum for faculty, staff and students should the U.S. go to war before the end of the semester. 2. The spring issue of the Faculty Development Newsletter is nearly complete. Lei Lani submitted a lead article for the newsletter which Jerry will include. Lei Lani will do a final edit of the newsletter before it is issued. 3. End of the year feedback letter: Jerry informed all members that an end of the year report is required and asked each to be thinking about writing a letter reflecting on the activities of the committee this year and ideas for improvement next year. These letters will be due in May and included in the end of the year report. 4. Professional Development Awards: $9050 was left from the $10,000 given to the faculty for professional development this year. The committee chose two colleagues to attend this summer's Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar and distributed the remaining funds to the eligible faculty who submitted applications.
