FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
March 12, 2009
3:30 pm - Library Study Room 112
MINUTES
Attending: Jerry Cerny, Charlene Gima and Chris
Hacskaylo
Unable to attend: Grace Funai, Ralph Kam, Jessica Kaniho and Guy Shibayama

Old Business
- Excellence in Education Day Debrief - Jerry shared the results of
the compilation of the post-it notes from the small group discussions at
Excellence in Aloha Day. Chris stated she was impressed with the breadth
and scope of the responses and knows the Retention Subcommittee of the
Recruiting and Retention Committee will be very interested in the list and
will find many items in it actionable by the subcommittee. Jerry also
said he had compiled the results of the 77 evaluation turned in. Most
were very positive with some appropriate suggestions in several. He said
next year's Faculty Development Committee will look at the results and
plan activities to address some of the suggestions. He also stated he
would share the results with the next Wo Learning Champions (WLC). They
will come on board in January 2010 and will be responsible for a Wo
Innovation in Learning Day (WILD) in early March 2010. He said as in the
past, the Faculty Development Committee, the Staff Development Council and
former WLCs will all assist with the planning and coordinator for the day.
Jerry will email both of these results to the Fac Dev Committee members.
Chris said that there is a Retention Subcommittee meeting tomorrow,
Friday, March 13, and the post-it note results will be discussed. Jerry
state he would attend and discuss how best to disseminate the results to
the campus community and where best to post the results on the
Intranet.
- Spring Chicken Sale - Jerry stated he would call the State Poultry
Processor and coordinate a chicken sale before the end of the semester.
He stated the committee made $175 on the fall sale.
- Perkins Assessment Conference - Monday and Tuesday, March 23-24 -
Jerry reminded the members to sign up for the conference. The sign up
deadline is tomorrow, Friday, March 13.
- Spring Newsletter - Jerry gave Chris a draft of the Spring Faculty
Development Newsletter. Chris will be adding an article into the
Newsletter on using concrete learning techniques in developmental courses.
She will also be editing the Newsletter. It will be published and
distributed on Friday, April 24.
New Business
- Spring Activities - Jerry distributed a flyer for a Millennial
Student Workshop taking place tomorrow, Friday, March 23, 9:30 in 7-634,
and a flyer for a Flex Quiz Generator Workshop taking place next Friday,
March 20, 11:00 am in 2-609. He also mentioned the Rich Ziegler
volunteered to offer a brownbag lunch presentation on Walking the
Battlefield at Gettysburg. Jerry is working with Rick to pick a day and
location for this presentation. Charlene said she would be interested in
doing one on the island of Okinawa in the fall semester.
- After Graduation Party - Jerry stated that Jessica has asked for
help in planning and coordinating the After Graduation Party. More
information will be disseminated at a later date. Jerry also stated there
may be some money left from Excellence in Aloha Day for the After
Graduation Party.
- Spring Faculty Professional Development money applications -
funding was distributed to several faculty colleagues for professional
development activities. Information on the specifics of the awards - who,
what, how much, can be obtained from Jerry. He stated he would
communicate the award information to the recipients and coordinate with
the Business Office in transferring the funds to the appropriate
department accounts.

The next Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, April 9, at 3:30
pm at a location TBA.
