Old Business

  1. Spring Activities - Jerry reminded everyone that one of the Committee's efforts this semester has been a faculty grant writing initiative. Having more faculty write grants is an action item in our current Strategic Plan. Ken Kato has money to support this initiative. Several grant writing workshops were held, the Grants Section of the Faculty Development Website has been updated and Emily Kukulies, Director of Student Life and Development, was funded to attend a Student Development Conference which had a extra day covering grant writing. Ralph stated that most institutions which receive significant grants have a grant writer on staff. He also stated that Sandy Matsui recently attended a Title III grant workshop and she reported that there will soon be significant grant money available for instruction redesign. Guy shared that a Curriculum Office at UH Manoa directed by Dr. Larry Zane was supported by grants for over twenty years. Jerry said he would talk to Ken Kato to report on the efforts of the Committee and see if this should continue to next academic year. Jerry also stated that no activities are schedule for the rest of this semester, but if ideas for activities are received, workshops can be scheduled.

New Business

  1. Faculty Development UH Foundation Account
    • The Committee agreed to fund from the Faculty Development UH Foundation Account six faculty members to attend the Pacific Regional Learning Summit, May 24-28, 2010. The registration fee is $53.74 each. Two registrations have been submitted which will be sent to Nida Chock for payment. Jerry will advertise this to the faculty again, letting colleagues know there are four slots left.
    • The Committee agreed to fund from the Faculty Development UH Foundation Account an iPods and iTunesU: Keys to Support Superior Podcasting on Campus webinar held in February. Jerry has personally paid the $199.00 registration fee and will submit paperwork for a reimbursement to Nida Chock.

  2. Spring Chicken Sale Event - Jerry stated he has been in communication with the owner of the 50th State Poultry Processors, Inc. and will have a chicken sales event on campus later this month. It will take place either on April 18 or 25. The money from this sale will be deposited into the Faculty Development UH Foundation Account.

  3. Committee Membership 2010-11 - Jerry thanked each member of the Committee for the hard work that each contributed to make the efforts of the Committee successful this year. He said he will write and distribute a letter of thanks soon. Steve, Carol and Silvan will be continuing next academic year. Guy and Jessica are finishing their second year of service and will be leaving the committee.

Open Discussion

  1. Guy encouraged all to attend the HCC 90th Anniversary Celebration Luau coming up at the Dole Ballroom on April 22. The HCC graduates who were interviewed and highlighted in a book have been invited. The book will be given to all who attend the luau. He also mentioned there will be a Fashion Show in the HCC cafeteria on April 24. He solicited volunteers to help teardown and cleanup after the event.

  2. Ralph echoed Guy's appeal for a good turnout at the luau. He said there were discussions around either having a gala extravaganza or a low-end fund raising event. The luau is a middle ground event. He stated there will be a gala event to end the 90th Anniversary Celebration.

  3. Jerry thanked Jessica for hosting the meeting in the Cosmetology classroom.

  4. There will be no May meeting unless a need arises to have one.
