FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING January 14, 2005 9:00 am - PCATT Conference Room, 2-510 MINUTES Attending: Jerry Cerny, Dolores Donovan, Monir Hodges, Sherrie Rupert, Jeannie Shaw and Lisa Yogi Not Attending: Dennis Kawaharada, Linda Soma 1. The following handouts were distributed; - Committee Meeting Agenda - Calendar of January Faculty Development Activities - Fac Dev Foundation Account Statement - Flyer for upcoming Spam Workshop Old Business 1. None New Business 1. Spring Activities: Jerry announced that the Information Technology Center and Faculty Development will co-sponsor a Spam Workshop on Friday, January 28. Kay Grimaldi and Aldrin Caraang will be the presenters. Additional Span Workshops will be offered if there is a need. The committee members had a discussion on Spam and Monir offered technical advise on the subject. Charlie Anderson has discussed co-sponsoring several Counseling Workshops with Faculty Development the spring. Lisa and Monir will meet to discuss activities and report at the next meeting. 2. Wo Learning Champion Activities: Lisa distributed a list of the Wo Speakers Bureau and stated the list is also available on the Wo website. Lisa and Monir will be looking at the list and suggesting speakers who should come to HCC and present. Wo will play for airfare and a stipend for the presenter. Lisa suggests inviting a presenter from Kauai CC who offers a workshop on True Colors. Jerry encouraged all members to visit the Wo website and look at the Speakers Bureau list. It was suggested that one speaker a month be invited to HCC. Lisa stated that the Wo will sponsor several Gwen Fujii presentations this semester. Scheduling was discussed. It was decided that no HCC presentation will be scheduled. HCC faculty and staff will be encouraged to attend any of the three Oahu presentation: 2/11 at LeeCC, 4/8 at KapCC or 4/29 at WinCC. Lisa stated that the instructions for applying to be the 4th Generation Wo Learning Champion has been distributed. The application deadline is February 15 and the selection made by March 15. Lisa also stated that the Wo champions have set up an exchange program for Community College faculty and staff. The information will be posted on the Wo website soon. 3. Professional Development Awards: Jerry asked the committee members to look at the Professional Development Award application. The submission deadline will be set at the next committee meeting and awards would be decided at the March committee meeting. 4. Faculty Development Newsletter: Jerry stated that there are no new full-time faculty members this semester. Other faculty news is light. The decision was made not to issue a Faculty Development Newsletter this semester. 5. Faculty Development Foundation Account: Jerry distributed a Fac Dev Foundation Account statement. Chicken sales continue to add to the account. Members were asked to think about activities that would require funding and discuss at upcoming committee meetings. 6. Excellence in Education Day: A planning meeting for the Excellence in Education Day is being held following the Fac Dev Committee meeting. Jerry encouraged members to stay if able. The Fac Dev Committee will play a large part in planning, coordinating and facilitating the activities of the day. Open Discussion 1. Jerry stated that he will not chair the After-Graduation Party this year. He has emailed the members of the Excellence in Teaching Committee to see if they will provide the leadership for the party. A large focus of the party has always been to honor the Excellent in Teaching nominees and winner. Dolores suggested having a get together after graduation at an off-campus location. Several Faculty Development Committee members stated they would help with a party but not be the chair of the event. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 4, at 9:00 am in 2-510.
