FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
October 1, 2010

MINUTES
Attending: Jerry Cerny, Silvan Chung, Carol Hasegawa, Norman Takeya and
Cyndi Uyehara
Unable to attend: Monir Hodges, Ralph Kam and Steve Mandraccia

- Faculty Professional Development Fund Application
Old Business
- Entertainment Book Fundraiser - Jerry collected checks for book
sales. He will make a deposit into the UH Foundation account on Monday.
Most of the 40 books have been sold. The fundraiser will be completed no
later than December 1.
- Chicken Sales Fundraiser - Jerry reported that 50th State Poultry
Processors, Inc., conducted a chicken sale on campus on August 29 and will
be having another on this Sunday, October 3. Ken Kato allows Faculty
Development to sponsor a chicken sales event once a quarter. Following
this Sunday's sale, 50th State Poultry Processors will send Jerry a check.
He'll report the amount at the next committee meeting.
New Business
- Fall Activities - The follow are possible activities for the fall
semester
- Stefanie Sasaki Library Presentation on "Films on Demand"
- Chulee Grove Tips on Traveling to Thailand Presentation
- Ross Egloria Creating Simple Rubrics and Surveys
- Jonathan Wong Latest Social Technologies and How Students Are
Using Them
- Mini HGTS Teachers Talking Seminar
- Professional Development Workshop in partnership with the Native
Hawaiian Center
- Norman and Guy Fo Workshop on Greening Your Home and Office
- Faculty Professional Development Fund Awards - Jerry passed around
the application form which will be used this year. After Carol's
suggestion, he asked several past awardees to comment on the application
and all reported it was straightforward and easy to fill out. The form
was approved for use for the 2010-11 Academic Year. Friday, October 29
was set as the deadline for fall applications. Money will be awarded at
the November 5 Committee meeting. If any major requests are made for
Mainland conferences and travel, they will be deferred until the spring.
Open Discussion
- Cyndi reported that Iris Saito has been very busy but still plans
on offering a puppet making workshop. The timing was discussed. It could
either be in the early to mid afternoon for faculty and staff or later in
the afternoon when colleagues could go home and return with a child. It
was decided that early to mid afternoon would be best. Cyndi will set a
day and time with Iris.
- Silvan reported that she and her Student Services colleagues are
meeting to revisit their mission statement and formulate program review
procedures. External consultants will be coming to help them with program
review.
- Norman gave an overview of the Solar Decathlon project. The
University of Hawaii entry is one of twenty selected nationwide. The
habitat will be designed and built through a partnership between the UHM
School of Architecture, UHM College of Engineering and several HCC
programs. It will take part in the competition in Washington, DC next
September and be displayed in Honolulu at the APEC Conference to follow.
The habitat will permanently be housed in a museum in Korea after the
competition. Norman also stated he has a ukulele course beginning tonight
with new students building an ukulele and old students coming to finish
theirs started in earlier classes.
- Carol reported that she and Moana Nikou are discussing a public
art workshop to be delivered before the end of the semester.
- The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 5 at 10:00 am
in a location TBA.
