FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
October 3, 2006
1:30 pm - 2-510
MINUTES

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Steven Chu, Pat Gooch, Ralph Kam, Femar Lee, Mario Mediati, Rona Wong and Rick Ziegler

The following handouts were distributed:

Old Business
  1. Introductions: Pat and Ralph, who were unable to attend the first meeting in September, introduced themselves to the other committee members.
  2. Entertainment Books: The sales are progressing nicely. Mario, Femar and Steven still have books to sell. Mario and Femar reported their remaining books have been spoken for. Steven will continue to sell the books he has. Jerry stated if book requests are received, books would be obtained from Steven until they are all sold. After, book purchase requests will be referred to Entertainment, Inc.
  3. Fall Activities:
    1. Rick summarized the preparation for the upcoming 1st Friday Presentation taking place this Friday in 7-634. Rick stated the presenters have met and will be ready for the presentation. Jerry encouraged all members to help spread the word and encourage folks to attend so the attendance will be large. He stated he would send out another email announcement tomorrow for the presentation.
    2. Rick stated he is obtaining the movie, Obsession - Radical Islam's War against the West. He will preview it and suggested it be shown at some time in the spring semester as a springboard to discussions about this topic. This could be similar to the campus discussions we had after the 911 attacks.
    3. Rick commented on the recent rise in tagging and vandalism here at HCC and the emails that have been sent out. He suggests the committee sponsor a round-table discussion on the topic facilitated by someone with knowledge of this problem. He suggested we partner with the Health and Safety Committee on this and perhaps we obtain a facilitator from HPD. It was suggested that Chulee Grove, Bert Shimabukuro and/or Bob Vericker be contacted for names of presenters.
    4. Jerry stated that Vern Takebayashi has volunteered to offer a series of web development workshops, which would interest faculty. Jerry suggested that perhaps Vern could lead a discussion on the book and topic, The World is Flat.
    5. Jerry also stated that Chulee has agreed to present an armchair exercise workshop. It is scheduled for Monday, November 6, at 12:00 noon in 2-214. Ralph mentioned that perhaps a follow-up Office Olympics event could be scheduled.
    6. It doesn't appear that Fridays are good days for activities. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons will be tried for upcoming events.
  4. Faculty Development Newsletter: Jerry stated that he and Rona will be working on finalizing the Newsletter, which will be finished by October 20. He asked members to send items of faculty professional development activities of their division colleagues for the Faculty Spotlight section. Ralph mentioned that Jerry Saviano and Brenda Kwon recently competed in a Poetry Slam and that Ron Takata has been involved with the Arliss Camsat project.
New Business
  1. Professional Development Fund Application and Procedures: The members agreed the current form fillable form posted in the Faculty Development Website is adequate and only needs the dates changed. The application deadline is October 27 with fall funding decisions to be made at the November committee meeting. Jerry stated he would send an email announcement to the faculty about the application deadline. He also stated if any major travel fund requests are received, they will be deferred and evaluated with other major travel fund requests during the spring semester.
  2. David Cleveland Refreshment Funding: Rick recently reported, and David Cleveland send Jerry an email, that David has received a $500 check from the Japanese Cultural Center for a presentation. The check was given to Ramsey for his Chancellor Enrichment Account. David suggested that some or all of this money be given the Faculty Development Committee for refreshments at activities. Jerry said he would contact Ramsey about this when Ramsey returns from his current Mainland trip.
Open Discussion
  1. Center for Teaching Excellence: Ralph shared his ideas for such a center here at HCC. Similar to Kapiolani CC, UH Manoa and HPU, Ralph envisions this center encompassing all teaching and learning resources, including the Faculty Development Committee, and having dedicated College funding to support it. He suggested that it also has a assessment component including resources and people to perform mid-semester evaluations for faculty.
  2. Templeton Grant: Ralph discussed this project and suggested that HCC could have viable applicants for a $50,000 science and religion grant. He asked if the Faculty Development Committee is the appropriate organization to advertise and facilitate discussions on this. The members agree that the committee is and Jerry stated a discussion workshop could be scheduled to begin discussions and present information on this grant. Ralph believes that Hawaiiana and Biology faculty could collaborate and apply for funding from this organization.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 2, in the ABRP facility hosted by Steven.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 pm.
