Old Business

  1. Fall Activities - Jerry summarized the fall activities that have taken place and those scheduled. A Mini Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar will take place immediately following this meeting. Ross Egloria presented three well-attended Laulima workshops the past month. A hybrid course workshop, facilitated by Ross, is scheduled for Thursday, Oct 10. Discussions are taking place with trainers from the Microsoft Store to have a Windows 8 presentation at the College. Use of tablets and security issues with tablets is an additional technology workshop that has been requested. Jerry is finding a presenter for this workshop. A brownbag discussion on student retention services at HCC will be held on Friday, October 11 at 12:00 noon in the Student Retention Office - 71D, Room 3. Bed Paudyal and Brenda Kwon have organized a Laulima Faculty Forum. About 15 faculty are participating as a pilot this fall and the forum will be open to all faculty and lecturers in the spring.

  2. Entertainment Book sales - This fundraiser activity is nearly complete. There are only a few books left to sell. The target to finish is December 1.

  3. Chicken Sales Fundraiser - 50th State Poultry is once again conducting quarterly chicken sales event on campus with proceeds shared with the Faculty Development Committee. Sales events were held on August 25 and September 27. An October 6 event will also be held. Jerry will make sure our new Vice Chancellor for Admin Services knows of this agreement and will coordinate events in the spring.

New Business

  1. Faculty Professional Development money - Jerry announced that the College has once again given the committee $10,000 for distribution to faculty members for faculty professional development for this academic year. The members agreed to reimburse the UC Dean account $1200 for funding a faculty member to the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar this past August. Jerry will send an email announcement to faculty announcing a round of funding for the fall. October 25 will be the submission deadline for the fall and funding decisions will be made at the November 1 committee meeting.

  2. Faculty Development Webinar from Magna Publications for Faculty and Staff Development - The committee members agreed to fund this webinar. It will be held on Tuesday, November 5 at 9:00 am HST and the cost is $349.00. Those committee members who can attend, will. All College faculty and lecturers will also be invited. For those who cannot attend the webinar live, there will be on-demand access to the broadcast for 30 days following the event. In addition, we will receive a CD of the broadcast and the resources after the event. Faculty Professional Development funds and not UH Foundation funds will be used to fund the registration fee.

  3. Wiley Learning Institute - A salesperson from this Institute recently contacted Jerry via email. The Institute is dedicated to help solve teaching, learning, and leadership development challenges and find solutions to professional development needs, whether it be for one faculty member or an entire university system. There is a free "Flipping the Classroom" webinar on November 12, at 10:00 am HST. Jerry will register for this webinar and announce it to the campus, inviting others to attend. The Institute offers a subscription rate for $149 for an individual and $2499 for 50 faculty.
Open Discussion

  1. Jerry announced that he will be retiring at the end of this academic year. A new Faculty Development Coordinator will need to be identified. A discussion was held on who that could be and if the person needs to have been a recent member of the committee to serve as coordinator. Identifying a coordinator by the end of this calendar year would allow the person to participate as a member of the committee during the spring semester. Jerry could mentor the new coordinator at the same time. Mieko asked for a summary of the coordinator duties which Jerry gave.

  2. The next meeting will be held on Friday, November 1, 9:00 am in the EIMT Building 24.

Adjourn

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 am.
