Old Business

  1. State Poultry Processors fundraiser - Jerry stated Jessica requested that the State Poultry Processors sell chickens on November 23. This is the day of the Cosmetology "Locks of Love" event. Jerry called the owner of State Poultry Processors and they already have a commitment for that day. They do have an opening on November 16 and will sell on campus that day. Jerry has submitted the facility request for this event. The Faculty Development Committee will receive $1.00 for every chicken that is sold during the event. Jerry also stated that Ken Kato says we can have a chicken sale such as this once a quarter, so another will be held after the first of the year.

  2. Entertainment Books Sales - Steven Chu has the only books left that have not been sold. He is on the Mainland at training until Monday. Jerry has received a request for a book. It was decided that if there is an unsold book left, it will be donated to Apprenticeship to be given away as a door prize at the Christmas Party.

  3. Fall Activities - Jerry is facilitating a Teachers Talking Seminar on Teachers as Coaches tomorrow, 11/7 at 9:00 am. This is a follow-up discussion on an article he recently emailed to all faculty and lecturers on the topic. Two Seminars will be held on the Millennial Students. One will be next Friday, 11/4 and the second will be Tuesday, 11/18. The second one will be held in the Native Hawaiian Center computer lab and will follow an Assistive Technologies: LiveScribe's Pulse Pen and Natural Readers Workshop held in the same room. Jerry encouraged all committee members to discuss activity ideas with their colleagues which the committee can address in the spring.
New Business
  1. Excellence in Education Day - Friday, March 7, 2009, has been designated a non-instructional day for Excellence in Education. Kyle Higa and Shanon Miho attended the meeting to assist in the planning for the events for the day. Grace stated that a retention initiative will be kicked off at the All College Meeting at the beginning of the spring semester, so follow-up activities at Ex in Ed would be appropriate. Ralph stated there is a follow-up Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) meeting on November 12 and this meeting might generate topics for Ex in Ed. Ralph also discussed a early alert form that is being developed and can be introduced at Ex in Ed. Achieving the Dream topics were also suggested as topics. It is assumed that the Staff Development Council will facilitate an afternoon excursion for the day. Money to support the day can come from the Chancellor, Faculty Development, Staff Development and a $5 registration feel. Jerry will meet with Dean Arashiro, Staff Development Coordinator, and then schedule a meeting with Erika Lacro after to obtain ideas and guidance for the day.

  2. Upcoming Wo Initiatives - Kyle and Shanon stated the current Wo Learning Champions are developing a calendar for 2010 which will list activities and news from all campuses. Ralph stated that that year will be the 90th anniversary for HCC. Kyle and Shanon also stated they are updating the Wo Speakers Bureau List and may offer workshops on civility during their time of service as Wo Learning Champions.

  3. Fall Faculty Professional Development Money Awards - Four applications for money have been received. Two are for "major travel" and the decision was made to defer them until the spring when they will be evaluated with the rest of the "major travel" requests. Two requests were approved. Information on these can be obtained from the Coordinator upon request.
Open Discussion
  1. Grace gave an overview of the upcoming High School to HCC day. She stated there were not enough lunches purchased last year and requested $325 from the Committee for lunches. This was approved.

  2. Guy thanked Jerry for sending out an email with an attachment of the Christmas party flyer.

  3. There will be no December Committee meeting unless a pressing need arises to have one.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 pm.
