Overview

In conjunction with the First Year Experience/Learning Communities program, the Native Hawaiian Center's Technology Integration studies and pilots new technologies for use in the classroom. Training workshops are conducted as part of this iniative in conjunction with Faculty Development and the Wo Learning Champions. Workshop topics and training dates and times are listed below.

Workshop I:   Laulima Overview and Web-Course Best Practices

Yes, the rumors are true!!!   The University is migrating away from WebCT.   If you're a current user of WebCT or have ever been interested in integrating web-based tools into your teaching NOW is the time to get up-to-date on the new Laulima system.   This workshop is the first in a series of four that will get you up to speed on the new Laulima web-based course tools system.   This workshop will go over the following:   an overview of online course design best practices, an overview of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and finally an overview of what the Laulima system is, how you can use it to facilitate student learning as well as course management.   We'll go over how to set-up your Laulima course site, how to control access to it, and give a preview of the MANY plug-ins Laulima gives you to customize your course. Faculty interested in attending the four part Laulima series should request a development account with UH ITS as upon completion of all four workshops you will have all the tools and knowledge to develop your own course in Laulima which you will be able to launch in the Fall 2008 semester. Whether you are a current WebCT user or are completely new to using web-based course management tools, this workshop is for YOU.

 

Student Response Systems:   TurningPoint

This workshop gives an overview of Student Response Systems and how instructors can use them to gauge student learning LIVE within the classroom instantaneously.   This workshop focuses on the TurningPoint system provided by Turning Technologies. Student Response Systems keep students involved and engaged in class and are invaluable course assessment tools that help instructors ensure that their SLOs are met.   To utilize the Student Response System instructors must use MS PowerPoint to deliver course lectures as SRS are built to be fully integrated with MS PowerPoint.   Workshop attendees will utilize TurningPoint to develop their own interactive SRS enabled PowerPoint lecture and will take it with them to use in their own classroom.

In this second of four sessions, we'll be covering the various tools that you as the instructor can configure into Laulima to develop your course sites into the powerful, interactive teaching tools that they can optimally be.   Among the tools we'll be covering are:   Resources, Assignments, Evaluation System, Gradebook, Link Tool, Modules, News, Podcasts, Post 'Em, Presentation, Roster, Schedule, Syllabus, and Web Content.   Faculty interested in attending the four part Laulima series should request a development account with UH ITS as upon completion of all four workshops you will have all the tools and knowledge to develop your own course in Laulima which you will be able to launch in the Fall 2008 semester.

 

Computer Classroom Management:   SchoolVue

Teaching in a Computer Lab environment poses many challenges as well as opportunities for course instructors.   This workshop will give an overview of CrossTec Corporation's SchoolVue system which is a computer classroom management software.   Learn how SchoolVue allows instructors to both engage students in the learning process, share and distribute learning materials and resources, assess them in real-time as well as prevent them from becoming too distracted by "other" activities learning in a computer classroom environment affords them.

In this session we'll be going over the multitude of Communication tools available in Laulima for you and your students to not only communicate with each other, but to engage deeper into the learning process as well.   We'll be going over the following:   Announcements, Discussion and Private Messages, Blogger, Chat Room, Discussion, Drop Box, E-mail Archive, Forums, Mailtool, Messages, Post 'Em and Wiki.   Faculty interested in attending the four part Laulima series should request a development account with UH ITS as upon completion of all four workshops you will have all the tools and knowledge to develop your own course in Laulima which you will be able to launch in the Fall 2008 semester.

 

Social Bookmarking with del.icio.us

Learn how to organize and keep your website bookmarks and references all in one place.   Do you use multiple machines between your home, school and job to do research?   Learn about this and other nifty tools that will allow you to keep all your bookmarks secure in one place so that you can access them no matter where you are, PLUS share them with your friends.   This workshop will focus on the del.icio.us service provided by Yahoo!, an excellent tool where you can not only store your bookmarks, but share them with your friends as well which makes it an ideal service for group research projects and collaboration as well as fun "social" applications.

 

Assessing with Online Surveys:   SurveyShare

Engaging students for feedback, whether it is within the classroom or other campus service areas is important if we wish to better improve teaching or service delivery.   The information age has made this easy through online surveys which can automatically crunch our data and provide near immediate reports.   Join us for this session and learn to develop a good survey instrument to use for your course or department and learn how it can be delivered, crunched and analyzed through the SurveyShare tool.

In this session we'll be going cover how you can use Laulima's tools to assess student learning and gauge engagement.   We'll talk about how you can develop and administer tests, surveys, polls and other forms of assessment through Laulima and other external tools that are Laulima compatible.   We'll cover the following tools:   Polls, and Tests and Quizzes and Gradebook. Google Apps for Education

Everyone knows of Google as being the world's #1 Internet Search Engine.   But did you also know it has tons of FREE tools of value to today's college student and educator?   This workshop will go over the basics of Google Apps for Education including:   Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Notebook, Google Toolbar and Google Scholar.

 

Managing Group Projects and Collaboration with Laulima

As a University of Hawaii system faculty or staff member you have access to the Laulima collaboration site.   Many of you may use or be looking to use Laulima to publish course syllabii, notes or assessment tools.   Did you know however that you can ALSO use Laulima to help manage your research projects or committee assignments?   Is there a committee or a joint grant or proposal you're working on?   Does your department have a need to improve its communication or collaboration processes?   This workshop will show you ALL you need to know on how you can effectively use Laulima to manage group projects and collaborate effectively with your colleagues.

Just about everyone knows and uses Microsoft Office, the de-facto industry standard office suite.   This workshop will introduce you to the new world of Online Office Suites.   These Office Suites are web-based and built for group collaboration and projects which is of tremendous value to both students who do group projects as well as office workers and project members who must collaborate together on documents while on the go.   The suites we will examine include:   Google Docs, Zoho and ThinkFree.

 

VoIP and Instant Messaging Technologies

Whether you are a course instructor, counselor or staff office worker, you will benefit from learning about these free, yet powerful tools available to anyone.   Services we will go over include:   Skype, GTalk, AIM, Yahoo!Messenger and WindowsLive/MSN Messenger.

 

Social Networking:   Engaging Your Students Within and Beyond the Classroom Walls

MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr.   You've heard of them.   You know your students are on them.   The first half of this workshop gives a quick overview of MySpace and Facebook, the two most popular Social Networking sites for college students on the Web.   We'll go over Social Networking and how you can leverage it to help enhance both your availability to service your students as well as how to enhance your classroom teaching.   Student users of both services will be on hand to discuss ways in which THEY would like to see there instructor's using MySpace or Facebook to reach out to them.   The second half of the workshop gives an overview of YouTube and Flickr and discusses ways that educators have tapped into these two valuable video and photo sharing social networking sites to enhance learning in their classroom.

 

3D Virtual Worlds:   Second Life

World of Warcraft.   Nintendo Wii.   PS3.   XBOX 360.   Let's face it, our current crop of students and those who will follow them in the years ahead have all grown up in the computer and gaming generation.   This workshop explores the future of education as we look toward the digital convergence of gaming technologies and the power of Internet-based communication.   Learn about the 3D Virtual World Second Life and how pioneering educators the WORLD over are harnessing it to create and enhance learning as well as social experiences in this powerful, interactive and immersive learning environment.   Your world is about to change.
