Not Attending: Theron Craig, Allen Tateishi
Guest: Marilynn Ito-Won

1. Jess gave a short and very informative tour of the Cosmetology
facility.

2. The following handouts were distributed;

Agenda
Calendar of October Faculty Development Activities
Illegal Drug Workshop flyer
Conflict Resolution Workshop flyer
Stew Cookoff flyer

Old Business

1. Jerry collected Entertainment Book checks and stated that the
selling of the books will be complete when all 40 books are sold or
in early December.

2. A draft copy of the fall newsletter was circulated. Leilani
will proofread it and return it to Jerry with a goal of sending it
to print shop early next week. A limited number of copies will be
printed and the newsletter posted on the Faculty Development
Website.

3. Jess stated that she and Leilani had met and decided to organize
two computer workshops per month during the year. She also said
that she and Leon, the Activities Subcommittee, would work together
on this and other Faculty Development activities for the year.
Jess has been working with Grace Ihara on the Stew Cookoff, which
will be held in the spring semester. Jess stated that Grace plans
to make and distribute a flyer each month to advertise this event.

4. Jerry encouraged all members to continue to look at the Faculty
Development website and send any needed changes (information
updated, dead links, edits, etc.) to him for fixing.

New Business

1. The professional development application used last year was
circulated. Leilani edited it for grammatical errors. The
committee members agreed that the application was good to use again
this year with the dates changed to this year. November 1 was
chosen as the application deadline for the fall semester. Funding
decisions will be made at the November 7 meeting. Jess asked about
the procedures that are in place once funding has been approved for
a faculty member. Jerry stated that the funds are distributed,
with training and travel requests and reports submitted to the
division secretaries, just as with any funding that is supplied by
the College. The committee agreed that any "major travel" funding
requests received during the fall will be deferred until the spring
when the majority of these requests are received.

2. The procedures and signup sheet for the Faculty Mentoring
Program last spring was circulated. The committee agreed to
solicit mentors and mortorees and make pairings again this fall.
November 1 was also chosen as the deadline for submission of the
signup sheets. Pairings will be made at the November 7 committee
meeting.

3. Jerry stated that Don Sepe, a consultant and trainer, visited
him this past summer and presented a learning style identification
system. Mr. Sepe wanted to present his system to the committee to
see if a presentation to the larger faculty community was
warranted. After reviewing his materials, Jess suggested that his
system is very pricey. Leon stated that many free learning and
personality inventories are available on the web, and paying for a
system does not make sense. Jerry stated that he would call Mr.
Sepe and inform him that the committee declines his offer of a
presentation.

Open Discussion

1. Leon stated that Student Life and Development and the AJ
Department will be hosting a Weed and Seed community policing
training session on Wednesday, 10/9 at 5:00 here at HCC. He
announced the hotdog wagon will be available to provide
refreshments. He also stated that teams will be assembled this
year and each team will be encouraged to participate in one
activity per month this year.

2. Leon announced that he was recently given one-on-one overview of
the research tools that are available on the internet. He said
that the Library will be conducting internet research workshops for
the Hawaiian students. He and Xin agreed to organize and schedule
a Faculty Development workshop for faculty.

3. The next meeting is scheduled for November 7, 2:30 pm in the
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning facility. Jerry will clear this
with Allen to make sure this day and time will work.

Adjourn

1. The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 pm.
