Purpose
Honolulu Community College is increasingly working with a diverse population of students with special needs. This committee will serve as a campus wide group to improve coordination of efforts, information sharing and education of the college community to better insure that our college responds to the needs and requirements of students with documented disabilities in compliance with ADA/Section 504.
The mission for this committee is:
- To promote an informed and hospitable learning community for students with disabilities (SWD).
- To achieve campus-wide ADA/Section 504 compliance
- To assist in the development of long range plans to improve services to SWD.
Function
The group will formulate and propose policy for administration to implement and create plans that will help guide faculty and staff in complying with legally required access for students with documented disabilities.
Specifically the committee members will:
- Serve as liaisons with the two fold responsibility of addressing committee issues as well as those voiced by their colleagues.
- Disseminate information to programs and units.
- Formulate and propose policy issues for administration to implement.
- Create plans that will help guide faculty and staff in complying with ADA/Section 504 mandates.
- Evaluate and advocate funding appropriations to meet compliance standards.
Workload
The committee would meet monthly. A Disaboility Service Provider(s) would serve as chair (co-chair) of this committee. No assigned time is foreseen at this time: however assigned time may be requested if a significant project needed to be completed.
