Composition
- Seven (7) faculty members is the suggested membership, although the composition may vary from year to year.
- A pluralistic membership is encouraged and valued as elements such as curricular issues and advocatory positions within a variety of contexts would thus be better addressed.
Purpose
The Committee on Social Equity will:
- Address existing and potential bias issues including, but not limited to:
- Age
- Culture
- Gender
- Language
- Race
- Religion
- Sexual orientation
- Social stratification
- Special population
- Present varied forums for the above issues to be discussed/presented;
- Provide a clearinghouse/non-structured platform for students, faculty, and staff to voice concern(s) about biases within the college sphere whether real or potential. This committee is not an avenue to file a grievance or complain; and
- Become a "weather-vane" on campus for changes in attitude or increase in a potential bias amongst the population as a whole. Act as a vehicle to pro-actively disseminate information on diversity.
Note: The former Committee on Gender Issues replaced and consolidated the interests and responsibilities of the now defunct Sex Equity Committee and Women's Studies Committee.
Function
- Provide an HCC representative to attend system wide meetings on Sex Equity issues;
- Attempt to have two presentations/discussion meetings per year on bias-related topics;
- Be a forum/focal point for campus personnel to air concerns/problems of a bias nature in an informal atmosphere; and
- Provide a repository for equity issues material such as films and written works which can be accessed by faculty and students.
Workload
Committee on Social Equity meets once a month or as needed.
