Funding
Purpose
The purpose of the Honolulu Community College Staff Development fund is to provide monetary support for institutional, professional, and personal development activities. Sources of funding include College funds in addition to contributions by College employees and members of the community and funds raised by the Staff Development Council for this purpose.
Types of activities that may be funded include conference registration fees, tuition for short-term classes, travel assistance, community service activities, and special projects that support the mission of the Staff Development Council at Honolulu Community College. Funding will not be provided for the purchase of books, computer software or hardware, office supplies, membership fees, organization luncheons, or incidentals.
Eligibility
Any regular Administrative, Professional, and Technical (APT) or Civil Service staff member at Honolulu Community College is eligible to apply for funding. Any member receiving maximum funding will be ineligible to apply for another grant until the next fiscal year.
Amount
A maximum amount of $3,000 may be spent on staff development awards for each fiscal year. The maximum amount of an award shall not exceed $500.00. Staff members may apply for one or more grants, the total of which shall not exceed $500.00 per fiscal year. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis as long as the maximum annual amount has not been awarded.
Procedure
- The staff member must complete an application for staff development funding [PDF]. Forms are available from any Honolulu Community College Staff Development Council member.
- The application and training request (UH Form-410) must be submitted to the Dean Arashiro, Personnel Officer who will review it for completeness.
- Applications will only be reviewed at regularly scheduled meetings usually at the beginning of each month.
- Approval/disapproval requires agreement of a Staff Development Council quorum.
- No personal presentations will be accepted.
- Applications are confidential.
- All decisions are final.
- Applicants will be notified of the decision by the Personnel Officer.
- Recipients will provide a completion report to the Staff Development Council within 60 days following the activity.
Criteria
- Breadth of benefit. Preference to activities that clearly and directly benefit the College and its mission. Lesser preference to activities that benefit individual programs. Least preference to those that benefit individuals.
- Cost. Preference to lower costs that enable approval of more requests.
- Importance. Preference to urgent or imperative activities.
- Availability of other funding sources. Preference may be given to those activities for which other funding sources are not available.
- Recency and frequency of prior Staff Development funding. Preference to applications of staff members who have not recently or frequently been awarded funding.
- Involvement in Staff Development and/or fundraising activities. Preference to applications of staff members who have most frequently participated in staff development and/or fund-raising activities and have most clearly demonstrated a commitment to professional development.
- Agreement with the Staff Development mission. Preference to activities that most strongly support the Staff Development mission.
- Date of application. If other factors are relatively equal, preference will be given to applications submitted earlier.
- Availability of funds. Decisions will be based on the availability of funds.
- Length of service. If other factors are relatively equal, preference will be given to applications of staff members with the longest terms of service to the College.
