The Summer CTE Academy is a six week exploratory summer program that offers the students the opportunity to experience various career and technical education programs offered at Honolulu Community College.

The Summer CTE Academy is a six week exploratory summer program that offers the students the opportunity to experience various career and technical education programs offered at Honolulu Community College. Students will apply their basic knowledge of math and science to practical projects, which will allow them to see concepts they have learned in the classroom come alive. Through lab work, group projects, lectures and assignments, students will explore the technical fields related to trades and services. Students will meet other students with similar interests, collaborate on projects and find solutions to real world projects.

As students complete CTE Academy projects on materials, structures, computer programming, teaching and other topics, they will gain insights into which career and technical education fields best match their abilities and interests. Students will rotate through 3 different modules lasting for two weeks each.

Students will also be provided with college success tools to help prepare them for entry into college. Students will be exposed to a college environment, identify general campus resources, demonstrate knowledge of college procedures, discuss the definition of success, and evaluate their academic and life goals. Students will attend this course once a week on Wednesdays from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Parents will attend a UH application and financial aid workshop and receive scholarship information. Program Descriptions

Students will be offered learning outcomes that give them a thorough understanding of the automotive industry and careers available, knowledge of nomenclature of basic tools and basic usage, shop safety, on-line technical reference usage, overview of the eight areas of automotive technology courses offered here at HCC. These areas include brakes, suspension and steering, manual transmission, differential and automatic transmission, electrical systems, air-conditioning, engine repair and engine performance.

Students will learn about the carpentry industry, practice quality workmanship, use appropriate materials, tools, equipment and procedures to carry out work as a carpentry professional. This session will culminate in producing a final project.

During the first week of the workshop, students will be provided with an introduction to core networking/IT concepts and build an actual working network with routers, switches, firewalls, servers and workstations. During the second week of the workshop, the students will look into the anatomy of a cyberattack. Students will run cyberattacks against actual systems with a focus on the methods used to detect a cyberattack in progress and various methods we can deploy to protect ourselves.

The Cosmetology department offers two Certificates and an Associate in Applied Science degree program. There are two educational pathways in the Cosmetology program: Cosmetology and Cosmetology Instructor Training. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the State Board of Cosmetology Examination.

Children learn more in their first few years than they will in any other stage of their life! Most of this important learning happens through play. This session will highlight how early educators provide intentional play-based experiences for young children, essentially laying the groundwork for their future development and well-being. We will also introduce the various early childhood education programs and career possibilities in our community.

Students who participate in this program will learn how to operate basic home sewing machines, create and complete a pair of “Jams” shorts to fit oneself. Through this process, they will have the ability to be creative and have a better understanding of the garment industry.

Training will take place at HCC’s AERO campus on Lagoon Drive. Students will learn many of the skills required for a Firefighter-1 level. The hands-on training includes CPR/AED, communicating with portable radios, donning firefighting protective clothing and Self-contained breathing apparatus, use of portable fire extinguishers, tying ropes and knots to haul tools and equipment, climbing ladders, assisting victims, performing search and rescue, using hoses and operating hose stream, conserving property and preserving the fire scene.

A comprehensive workshop where students learn, collaborate and create their own original works. Key focus areas include:

  • Songwriting
  • Exploring creative writing and basic music theory in popular forms of song, students learn specialized techniques to create their own original works.
  • Mentorship
  • Industry professionals perform and present inspiring & valuable lessons.
  • Music Production
  • Understand the fundamentals of acoustics and recording in the Mike Curb MELE Studios and using Apple’s LogicPro software.
  • Video Production
  • Create, direct, and shoot a music video with GoPro cameras and video editing software.

This program is perfect for the student who is interested in learning about the field of sheet metal. This includes: metal fabrication, fabricating air conditioning ducts, architectural metal work and pattern development. This session will culminate in creating a final project.

Students will learn theory and practical skills in the various phases of welding and cutting. This includes arc welding, plasma and air carbon arc cutting, oxyacetylene welding, TIG welding, MIG welding, gas metal and flux core arc welding, welding inspecting testing principles and fabrication techniques.This session will culminate in creating a final project.
