Summer CTE Academy is a five week exploratory summer program that offers high school students the opportunity to experience various career and technical education programs offered at Honolulu Community College. The Summer CTE Academy is open to all high school students (Class of 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028). Through lab work, group projects, lectures and assignments, students will explore the technical fields related to trades and services from a wide range of subjects, including automotive, computer network and support, early childhood education, music, fashion, welding, and more!
Participants will rotate through three different modules lasting for seven days each. As the attendees complete CTE Academy projects, they will gain insights into which career and technical education fields best match their abilities and interests.
Attendees will be exposed to a college environment, be able to identify general campus resources, demonstrate knowledge of college procedures, discuss the definition of success, and evaluate their academic and life goals!

Prerequisites
Open to all rising High School Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and recently graduated Seniors (Class of 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028)

Architecture, Engineering and Construction Technologies (AEC)
Our Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Technologies (AEC) program will prepare you for immediate employment as architectural or engineering drawing technicians or construction management interns. If you are already employed in this field, our AEC program can help you improve your knowledge and skills, providing you with advancement opportunities.
Automotive Technology (AMT)
The Automotive Technology (AMT) program at Honolulu CC is a comprehensive five semester program master certified by the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation (ASEEF) that prepares students for employment as automotive technicians. It is certified in all eight ASE areas: engine repair, automotive transmission and transaxle, manual drivetrain and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronics systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. Summer Program Students will be offered learning outcomes that give them a thorough understanding of the automotive industry and careers available, knowledge of nomenclature of basic tools and basic usage, shop safety, on-line technical reference usage, overview of the eight areas of automotive technology courses offered here at Honolulu CC. These areas include brakes, suspension and steering, manual transmission, differential and automatic transmission, electrical systems, air-conditioning, engine repair and engine performance.
Carpentry Technology (CARP)
Entrance into the carpentry trade is usually obtained through serving a four-year indentured apprenticeship. The Carpentry Department offers a program of instruction which, when successfully completed, provides an excellent background for those desiring to enter the Apprenticeship Program. Industry standards and safety regulations are emphasized.
Computing, Security & Networking Technology (CSNT)
Computing, Security & Networking Technology (CSNT) program is one of our more popular programs. Will provide you with a firm foundation in the basics of computers, networking, and information systems.
Cosmetology
The Cosmetology department offers two Certificates and an Associate in Applied Science degree program. There are two educational pathways in the Cosmetology program: Cosmetology and Cosmetology Instructor Training. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the State Board of Cosmetology Examination.
Diesel Mechanics Technology (DISL)
In our Diesel Mechanics Technology program you’ll learn about heavy duty truck engines and chassis components and how to repair and maintain heavy duty truck equipment. You’ll also develop proficiency in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines, fuel and electrical systems, driveline and suspension components, and hydraulic systems and heating ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC).
Early Childhood Education (ECED)
The Early Childhood Education program prepares students for work in a variety of positions working with young children and with their families. The certificates and degree offered are designed to allow students to meet requirements for various levels of entry into the early childhood field and articulate with UH Mānoa and UH West O‘ahu’s programs.
Fashion Technology (FT)
The curriculum is designed to provide competency for a wide range of occupations in the fashion industry. Theoretical knowledge and practical skills are applied in clothing construction, industrial sewing, flat pattern making, designing, textiles, fashion sketching, grading, marking and cutting, and computerized grading and marking. Internship or cooperative education experiences are available to interested students. This broad background enables students to select various occupations such as designer, patternmaker, cutter, or custom dressmaker.
Fire & Environmental Emergency Response (FIRE)
If you’re interested in fire prevention and emergency response our Fire and Environmental Emergency Response (FIRE) program is perfect for you. This summer, fire professionals will be teaching you Rope Rescue (Low Angle Rope Rescue Operational) and American Heart Association Heartsaver Adult First Aid, CPR, & AED skills.
Music & Entertainment Learning Experience (MELE)
MELE – Music & Entertainment Learning Experience – utilizes a comprehensive music business and production curriculum meeting the requirements for entry-level training of music industry and production professionals. The curriculum focuses on combining academic experience with real-world applications to prepare students to work in the rapidly evolving global music industry of the 21st century. The program core offers a rounded curriculum grounding students in the basics of the music industry, sound recording and the business of music.
Occupational & Environmental Safety Management (OESM)
OESM – Program provides practical training in occupational and environmental safety and health. The curriculum offers a broad background on safety and health program administration, workplace hazard recognition/evaluation/control, emergency preparedness, worker’s compensation principles, hazardous chemical risk assessment, and environmental compliance.
Welding Technology (WELD)
The Welding curriculum is designed to meet the minimum skill standards established by the American Welding Society (AWS) for entry-level welders. Training is given in both theory and practical skills in the various phases of welding and cutting. This includes arc welding, plasma and air carbon arc cutting, oxyacetylene welding, TIG welding, MIG welding, gas metal and flux core arc welding, welding inspecting testing principles and fabrication techniques. Entry-level welders are employed in a wide range of industries that use welding and welding-related tasks. This range of industries includes small, medium, and large union and non-union facilities. MIG welding, gas metal and flux core arc welding, welding inspecting testing principles and fabrication techniques. This session will culminate in creating a final project.
