It’s finally finished, the Spring 2020 issue of Art & Soul

From Ka Lā News

Spring 2020 was an interesting semester for HonCC students, as Honolulu Community College shifted all courses from in-person to online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden switch cause many changes for students, faculty/staff, services, clubs, and organizations.

In the case for HCC Student Media Board (SMB), it meant delaying the publication of the Spring 2020 issue of Art & Soul. The magazine was due to be publish in early April. An Arts Festival was planned as a release party for the magazine that would’ve included an art gallery, open mic, musical concert, poetry reading, art flea market, and raku pottery making.

Now, long after the Spring semester has finished, the overdue magazine is finally done.

This issue of Art & Soul is the last of it’s kind from editor-in-chief Alyssa Baligad, or Halo, and Student Media Board adviser Mike Leidemann. Halo has graduated from Honolulu Community College and now attends University of Hawai’i at Manoa, while adviser and assistant professor of journalism Mike Leidemann retired at the end of spring. Throughout their time at Honolulu Community College, Mike has overseen the publication of 6 issues of Art & Soul, 4 of which Halo has worked on. The pair, along with others, revive the creative arts and literary magazine back in 2016 to showcase the amazing talent and artwork of HonCC students.

Thank you to Halo for all your contribution and dedication into creating the magazines and the work you’ve done for SMB. And thank you to Mike for advising Student Media Board and organizing the publications of Art & Soul and Ka Lā News. SMB wishes both of you well in the next chapter of your life.

With COVID-19 still at large, for the time being, a pdf version of the magazine is available for your view, until hardcopies become available.
