The Computing, Security, and Networking Technology program's mission is to serve the community as a learning-centered, open door program that provides technical training to meet the demands of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry and the needs of the individual. The program is designed to provide the student with a mixture of knowledge and hands-on training with an emphasis on preparing students for entry-level employment in the ICT industry.
The Honolulu Community College CSNT program has established an articulation with the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu that provides the option to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Information Security and Assurance (ISA). Within the BAS in ISA at UH West O'ahu, students may also choose to complete a focus area in CSNT by completing four to six 300-level CSNT courses at HonCC, which can also be used to meet the requirements for an Advanced Professional Certificate in CSNT. Students who complete the Associate of Science degree in CSNT may apply to transfer to UH West Oʻahu to complete the BAS in ISA baccalaureate degree program. Students may be concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science program at UH West Oʻahu and the CSNT AS or APC program at Honolulu CC. The CSNT program counselor at Honolulu CC and the counselor at UH West Oʻahu can provide more detailed information about courses specifically required or recommended for the BAS in ISA.
Cyber Defense Education Certification
The Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency have reviewed the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu and Honolulu Community College programs in the field of Cyber Defense Education and certified that these programs have met the nationally established criteria for the depth and maturity of established programs. Honolulu Community College has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Two-Year Education through Academic Year 2021.
Associate In Science (AS) Degree
The Associate in Science (AS) Degree in the Computing, Security, and Networking Technology program is a two year course of study that prepares the student for entry-level employment in the field of Information and Communications Technology. Core courses are designed to give students a firm foundation in the basics of computers, networking, system administration and information security. The AS Degree also provides options for a Certificate of Achievement in Networking and Telecommunications, and a Certificate of Achievement in Information Assurance.
Elective courses allow students to further specialize in a field of study. Students will have the opportunity to participate in an internship or cooperative education experience before completing the program. Certain CSNT courses also prepare the student to take the following Information and Communications Technology industry certification exams: Computer Technician A+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Professional, Security+, Linux+, and VMware Certified Professional. The CSNT program is a Cisco Academy, a CompTIA Training Center, a Microsoft Regional Academy, and a VMware Academy.
Certificate of Achievement in Information Assurance
Courses selected for this certificate, meet the two year core knowledge unit requirements for a college to become recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Two-Year (CAE2Y). This program, which is sponsored by the NSA and DHS, recognizes colleges which have met their standard of academic excellence in Information Assurance education. Honolulu Community College is currently recognized as a CAE2Y.
Certificate of Achievement in Networking and Telecommunications
Courses within this certificate provide the student with a solid foundation in networking and telecommunications. This certificate is built upon industry standards and provides support for the following industry certifications: A+, Security+, Linux+, CCNA
Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) in CSNT
The Advanced Professional Certificate in CSNT is designed to provide the student with advanced technical training in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) with a core emphasis on Information Assurance. This program also features training in the soft technical skills required to become an ICT professional. The student will have the opportunity to pursue advanced industry certifications.

What part of computers does this program focus on?
It will teach you to connect computers and databases together; to design, install and support a computer system and to maintain and service network hardware and software. You will not learn how to be a computer programmer although we do offer a few classes in programming, which are not required but can be used as an elective.
Will I be able to get certified for CISCO, A+ and Microsoft after completing your program?
Yes. The core courses for the program will prepare you to take the industry exams. However, you will have to pay separately to take those exams since they are not required for your course work.
Can I transfer these credits to earn a Bachelors Degree?
Yes. After completing your AS degree from Honolulu CC, you can transfer to UH West Oahu and earn a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computing, Security and Networking Technologies or a Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Security Assurance. You can also earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Systems Administrations at Hawaii Pacific University. Both Bachelor degrees require that a minimum of 30 credits be completed at that campus.
Can I get credits toward my degree if I have CISCO, A+ Certification or other industry certifications?
Yes. Please see the program counselor and you may be able to get credits for the CSNT program.
Are there any classes offered in the evening or through distance education?
No- not at this time. All classes are offered on campus during the day.
Are all of the classes taught in lecture format?
No. Most of the classes include lab so there is a lot of hands-on instruction. Some classes may also be offered as hybrid courses including a combination of classroom training and remote access assignments.
What is the difference between the internship and cooperative education class?
An internship is where you are performing some kind of work activity related to computer hardware or networking without getting paid, whereas cooperative education is performing some kind of work activity related to computer hardware or networking but you are getting monetary compensation.
Do I need to find my own internship or cooperative education activity?
Yes, if you are not presently employed in the field, the coordinator for the internship program will provide you with referrals for possible internship position. It will then be your responsibility to follow up with the contact. If you are presently working in the field, you may be able to use that work activity for the cooperative education requirement.
How many work hours are needed for the internship or cooperative education elective?
One credit hour is equal to 75 hours of work activity so to complete 3 credits, you will need to complete a total of 225 hours. These 3 credits can be taken during separate semesters if you cannot complete all of the hours in one semester.
What kind of job can I get with an Associate of Science Degree?
An Associate degree will prepare you to work in a variety of industries such as networking, telecommunications, cabling, security, repair and maintenance in addition to entry level positions such as help desk technician or network technician.
What kind of job can I get with a Bachelor’s degree?
A Bachelor’s degree will prepare you to work as a systems administrator. You will be equipped to use your technical knowledge in an administrative environment since most of the upper division classes you will be taking are in business and public administration. Other employment opportunities include entry level positions as a system or network administrator, help desk specialist, telecommunications administrator or security analyst.

What is the Certificate of Achievement in Information Assurance?
This certificate is built around courses that conform to program criteria for our campus to be designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence for training in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense- (CAEIA/CD- a program sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Dept of Homeland Security (NHS). CAE IA/CD institutions receive formal recognition from the U.S. Government as well as opportunities for prestige and publicity for their role in securing our Nation’s information systems.
If I am interested in earning a BAS from UHWO, should I put in an application there or at Honolulu CC?
It does not make a difference. The only thing to remember is that the majority of the lower and upper division CSNT classes are offered at Honolulu CC. You will only be taking a minimum of 30 credits at UHWO. If you apply to Honolulu CC, there is no application fee, whereas UHWO charges an application fee.
If I am a UHWO student, can I take classes at Honolulu CC and UHWO?
Yes, if you have been accepted at UHWO, you can take classes at Honolulu CC. However, if you are receiving Federal financial aid, you may be required to take a minimum number of credits at UHWO so you will be dual enrolled at both campuses.
If I am an Honolulu CC student, can I take classes at Honolulu CC and UHWO?
Unless you have been accepted at UHWO, you will not be able to take classes on that campus while enrolled at Honolulu CC.
