New Business

  1. UH Foundation Account: The committee members agreed that if the Student with Disabilities workbooks, which will be on sale for $5 each at the upcoming Identifying and Helping Students with Disabilities at HCC workshop, look useful, Jerry can buy up to 10 copies to distribute to strategic locations around campus. Reimbursement can be made from the Faculty Development Foundation account.

  2. Spring Activities:

    1. WILD: Sheryl Legaspi reviewed the progress of the planning for WILD on Friday, March 3. She stated that the Native Hawaii Center has setup an excursion to the Academy of Arts to view the current Captain Cook exhibit there. They will solicit participants and pay for transportation and admission. Sheryl asked for volunteers for 'greeters' for the morning breakout sessions to introduce the speakers and present leis. Lisa stated she could do this for two sessions and volunteered Iris Saito to do this for one session. Bernadette and Jeannie also volunteered to be greeters. Sheryl stated that Wo Learning Champions program will contribute $1095 for WILD. Lisa will pick up continental breakfast goods and drinks at Costco the day before WILD and asked for help to setup on Friday morning. She will pick up coffee the morning of WILD. She will be using cash collected with registrations to pay for these items. Paper goods will be provided from current Faculty Development supplies.

    2. Identifying and Helping Students with Disabilities at HCC workshop: This workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21 at 3:00 pm. Dr. Shannon Simonelli from the UH Center on Disabilities Studies will be leading this workshop. The workshop is open to all HCC faculty and staff. Dr. Simonelli has volunteered to return for follow-up workshops if there is interest.

    3. Jeannie stated that she would contact Jeff Owens to discuss his "Lunch and Learn" Series Presentation on security that will be delivered here during the spring semester. With WILD in March, April was suggested as a good month for this presentation.

    4. Lisa stated that Pierre Senat, Emergency Cardiac Care Instructor and proactive fitness and lifestyle management educator with the Allied Health and Fitness Institute, who is doing a health and wellness breakout during WILD, is willing to return after WILD for follow-up health and wellness workshops. He will possibly be doing a CPR renewal session for the ECE faculty and staff on the afternoon of WILD.

  3. Professional Development Awards: The current on-line application for Faculty Professional Development Awards was approved for use this spring. March 3 was set as the application deadline for the spring. Awards will be decided at the March Faculty Development Committee meeting. Jerry stated there is $9550 left to distribute and asked all committee members to encourage their faculty colleagues to find an applicable professional development activity to attend and apply. Two slots for this summer's Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar will be paid from this money. Matching slots paid for by System Perkins funds should be available later.

  4. Faculty Development Newsletter: Rona reported that Silvan Chung would write an article for the Spring Faculty Development Newsletter. There are two new faculty members to highlight in the newsletter. Jerry stated the newsletter will be published in mid to late April and asked committee members to solicit professional development activities from their colleagues for inclusion in the Newsletter.
Open Discussion
  1. Vern Takebayashi will be offering a 30-minute workshop this Friday on using Google in a more efficient and effective manner. A flyer was distributed for a $35 Google: Advanced Search Techniques workshop to be offered at UH Manoa Krauss Hall on March 4. Monir summarized several of the highlights of Google for the committee members.

  2. Lisa asked the members if they thought we as a committee were doing what we are suppose to be doing or not doing enough. The consensus was that with the current efforts needed to plan for WILD and the other spring activities in place, the committee is on track with what we should be doing.

  3. The members thanked Lisa for hosting the meeting and providing a delicious vanilla wafers, strawberries and yogurt snack.

  4. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 9, at 3:00 pm, location TBA.

  5. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 pm.
