FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
February 12, 2009

Old Business
- Excellence In Education Planning
The Excellence in Education Day will be held on Friday, March 6. All
former Wo's, the Faculty Development Committee, the Staff Development
Council and the Recruitment and Retention (R&R) Retention Sub-committee
are all part of the planning for this day. The planning for the day was
finalized. Upon Shanon's suggestion, Kimo Keaulana's presentation
"Treating Others with Aloha" will be the keynote replacing Erika Lacro's
presentation of Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE)
data. Upon Elton's suggestion, the name of the day is changes to
"Excellence in Aloha Day." The day will begin with a continental
breakfast. Monir and Jessica have agreed to coordinate this. Lunch will
be bentos. Grace will coordinate purchasing them. Jonathan and Joy will
coordinate an afternoon campus beautification service project. At the end
of the afternoon project, participants will gather in the large
Apprenticeship classroom for a mixer with light refreshments. Jonathan
and Joy will work with Monir and Jessica on refreshments for the
afternoon. A $5 registration fee will be collected. Jerry will produce
and distribute a flyer for the day. Jonathan and Jerry will collect
registrations and money. The theme for the day will be aloha and
retention. After breakfast Erika Lacro will welcome the participants in
the Loui Conference Center. Chancellor Mike Rota will be unable to
attend. A plenary session of all attendees with a discussion of retention
will follow Kimo's presentation. Questions were finalized which will be
sent out to the campus community before the day to stimulate small group
discussions and presentations during this session. The morning will end
with breakouts for faculty and staff. Suggested breakouts include;
- Learning Communities by Leon Florendo and Robbie Dotson
- Universal Design for Learning by Megan Conway
- Millennial Student and Education Technology by Jon Blumhardt
- Presentation of CCSSE Data by Erika Lacro
- Staff coordinated breakout - TBA
- Planners, other than Faculty Development Committee members, engaged
in Excellence in Aloha planning were thanked and dismissed.
- Faculty Development Committee Charter - Several minor changes were
made to the Committee Charter. Jerry will communicate these to Jim Poole,
Chair, Faculty Senate Executive Committee, and find out how to institute
the changes.
- Spring Newsletter - Jerry and Chris will be writing and editing
the Spring Faculty Development Newsletter. It will be published and
distributed on April 17. Chris will write an article about concrete
training for developmental math and English students. She stated that
Mike Ferguson who teaches Cosmetology Chemistry also uses concrete
training aids and she will contact him to contribute to the article.
Jerry will find out from Personnel the names of new faculty members and
obtain biographies for the Newsletter.
New Business
- Spring Faculty Professional Development fund applications - the
form updated last fall will be used for spring application awards.
Friday, March 6, was chosen as the deadline for submission for this
spring. Jerry will notify faculty members of this deadline. Funds will
be distributed at the March Faculty Development Committee Meeting.

The next Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, March 12, at 3:30
pm in one of the 1st floor Library Study Rooms.
