SEPTEMBER FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES


FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
September 3, 2010

MINUTES

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Silvan Chung, Carol Hasegawa, Ralph Kam, Steve Mandraccia, Norman Takeya and Cyndi Uyehara
Unable to attend: Monir Hodges

Handouts - the following handouts were distributed to the Committee members:

New Business

  1. Introductions were conducted around the table - Jerry, Silvan, Carol, Ralph and Steve are continuing members. Norman, Cyndi and Monir are new to the committee this year. Jerry informed them they will serve on the committee for two years.

  2. Activities Sub-committee - Monir was volunteered and Steve volunteered to serve on the Activities Sub-committee this year. They will assist Jerry in surveying our faculty colleagues on activities and helping to facilitate the activities this year.

  3. Fall Activities - Jerry stated there are several activities already planned: Reappointment Application and Tenure/Promotion Dossier Preparation Workshops, Library Presentation on "Films on Demand" by Stefanie Sasaki, Tips on Traveling to Thailand by Chulee Grove, Creating Simple Rubrics and Surveys by Ross Egloria, Latest Social Technologies and How Students are Using Them by Jonathan Wong, Mini Hawaii Great Teachers Seminars and Professional Development Workshops co-sponsored with the Native Hawaiian Center. Norman stated that he and Guy Fo would like to offer a workshop on Green Technologies.

  4. Faculty Development Statement - Jerry passed around the Faculty Development Statement which he has asked each member to read prior to the meeting. Carol had a concern about travel/training completion reports requirement for colleagues who receive Faculty Professional Development money awarded by the committee as stated in the document. Carol stated she reread the section and her concern was addressed. The Statement was written several years ago, approved by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and reapproved by the Faculty Development Committee each year. The Committee member did reapprove the Statement as the guiding document for activities and initiatives for the 2010-11 academic year.

  5. Faculty Development UH Foundation Account - Jerry distributed a Faculty Development Committee UH Foundation account statement. The balance stays close to $4000 each year. Jerry asked each member to think about applicable activities for spending this money. Jerry always received several requests from other committee and organizations on campus to help them fund refreshments and food. He stated he will always email a request to the committee when funding requests are received.

  6. Fundraiser - Jerry gave each committee member three Entertainment Books to sell. He stated that Steven Chu, ABRP, was on the Faculty Development Committee several years ago and has helped out and sold books even after his service on the committee ended. Jerry has asked him if he is willing to again sell books this year. If payment is made by check, it should be made out to UH Foundation with HCC Fac Dev Comm on the memo line. The price of each book is $30 and the committee makes $6 on each one. Ken Kato allows the committee to work with State Poultry Processors and have a chicken sale on a Sunday once a quarter. A chicken sale took place on August 29 and another one is scheduled on October 3 for the summer and fall quarters.

  7. Faculty Development Website Monitor - Jerry asked each committee member to look at the Faculty Development Website and report any broken links or other needed changes to him. He will make the changes.

Open Discussion

  1. Ralph asked if this is a WILD year or an Excellence in Education year. Jerry stated that the first Friday in March will be an Excellence in Education day. Two years ago, we changed the name to Excellence in Aloha day. The Committee, along with the Staff Development Council and current and former Wo Learning Champions, will be involved with the planning for the day.

  2. Jerry stated that one of our the Committees major activities is awarding $10,000 to our faculty colleagues for professional development. He stated a call for all application will take place in October. If any "major travel" requests are received in the fall, they will be deferred and evaluated with all "major travel" requests in the spring.
