MINUTES

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Steven Chu, Grace Funai, Charlene Gima, Chris Hacskaylo, Ralph Kam and Mario Mediati
Unable to attend: Pat Gooch

The following handouts were distributed:

New Business

  1. Welcome and Introductions: Jerry welcomed each member to the committee for the academic year and thanked each for serving. Introductions were conducted around the table. Refreshments were provided for the meeting.

  2. Faculty Development Statement: The Faculty Development Statement, originally written several years ago and updated as needed through the years, was re-approved as the guiding document for the Committee for this academic year. This statement is accessible via the Mission link on the homepage of the Faculty Development Website.

  3. Faculty Development Committee Charter: Jerry shared that the FSEC required each committee to develop a committee charter two years ago. The Faculty Development Committee Charter is posted and accessible via the Committee Information link on the HCC Intranet. Jerry asked each member to review the Charter and send any recommended changes/edits to him. Each committee is asked to review its charter annually.

  4. Subcommittees: Mario and Chris volunteered to serve on an Activities Subcommittee and Charlene and Ralph volunteered to serve on a Newsletter Subcommittee.

  5. Foundation Account: Jerry shared the Faculty Development UH Foundation Account Statement with the committee members. The current balance is $3782.87. Entertainment Books will once again be sold to raise money this fall. Money from this account is used to purchase leis and refreshments at Faculty Development events, honorariums as needed for off-campus presenters, and to support leis and refreshments for other campus committees as applicable. Jerry stated he would always ask for an e-mail approval from the members when money requests are received. Each member was given three Entertainment Books to sell. Two cases, forty books, will be sold this year. This will generate approximately $300 for the Foundation Account. Jerry also stated that he did receive e-mail approval from the majority of committee members to financially support an upcoming Knowledge Workshop series delivered by Ed Nuhfer. Ed came to HCC several years ago and offered Knowledge Workshops. This fall he will offer two workshops - one for beginners and one for faculty who have been using Knowledge Surveys and want to learn more. HCC is partnering with Windward CC in offering these workshops and sharing the costs.

  6. Teaching for Success Publications: In the past, the Faculty Development Committee has purchased a 25-site license to duplicate and distribute the Teaching for Success Newsletter. They no longer print the Newsletter in hardcopy. They do post them and many other teaching and learning resources on a secure website. Last spring $500 from the Faculty Professional Development money was designated to purchase access to this website for the year. Faculty were notified of this and provided a login and password. Purchasing this again will be evaluated in the spring. Purchasing a subscription to "The Teaching Professor" to replace Teaching for Success Publications next year is a possibility.

  7. Fall Activities: Scheduled fall activities for this month include two Reappointment Application and Tenure/Promotion Dossier Preparation workshops during the week of September 10. As newly tenured/promoted faculty members, Grace will attend one and Steven the other to make a short presentation on their experiences in this process. Vern Takebayashi and Jan Petersen both want to partner with the Committee on workshop series. Vern's will be on "The World is Flat" and Jan will be for professional development for distance education faculty. Grace volunteered to facilitate a workshop covering general recruiting information and information colleagues can share about their programs during campus tours. Chris stated her interest is in hands-on teaching and would like to facilitate a workshop on this with other College Skills Center colleagues.

  8. State Poultry Processors, Inc: In the past, the Faculty Development Committee has made money when Koala Moa was allowed to come to campus and sell chickens in the Admin Parking Lot. This is no longer allowed. However, State Poultry Processors, Inc. is allowed to sell chickens at HCC. Jerry will investigate this as a possible fundraiser.

  9. Professional Development Money for 2007-07: Jerry announced that the committee will receive $10,000 from the College to distribute to faculty for professional development. The application form and award procedures will be discussed at the next meeting.

Open Discussion

  1. Grace stated she has put together a Campus Resource List for Students and asked that it be linked from the Faculty Development Website. She will be sending it out to the campus community for information for all faculty and staff.

  2. Ralph stated he is very interested in establishing a Teaching and Learning Center, similar to the one at HPU, here at HCC. This will involve space and money, and he will present this to the Planning Council for its consideration. The Center would include resources for a mid-semester student evaluation program.

  3. Jerry asked about Kathy Kane, Director, UH Manoa Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support, and her visit to a Committee meeting last spring. Ralph stated that she did visit and presented an overview of their mid-semester evaluation program. Jerry stated he would follow-up with her to see where we can go with this at HCC.

  4. Grace discussed David Panisnick recent proposal for under-loaded faculty to sit-in on a colleague's class for a semester to observe and learn. No one is sure how the Faculty Development Committee will be involved with this. More investigation and discussion will follow.

The next meeting will be Friday, October 5, 9:00 am, in the ABRP facility.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 am.
