Handouts - the following handouts were distributed to the committee members;

Old Business

  1. State Poultry Processors fundraiser - Jerry stated that he has recently talked to the owner of State Poultry Processor, Inc. and the owner is still looking for a Sunday for this semester to sell bar-b-que chickens in our Admin parking lot. They will not require any assistance during this sale and the Faculty Development Committee will receive a percentage of the money from the sales. Jerry will submit the required paperwork to the Business Office when a date is identified.

  2. Entertainment Books Sales - most of the books have been sold. Grace and Guy turned in the money from their books. This fundraiser will continue until all 40 books are sold.

  3. Faculty Mentoring Program - several mentor/mentoree pairs have been established from forms turned in earlier. Grace has submitted a mentor form. Jerry will send out an email requesting a mentoree to pair up with her.
New Business
  1. Faculty Professional Development Program - the professional development application was approved to be used for this academic year. It is the same form as was used in previous years. The dates have been changed to reflect the 2008-09 academic year. October 31 was chosen as the deadline for fall applications with funding decisions to be made at the November 6 meeting. Applications for major travel will be accepted this fall, but now acted upon until the spring. Grace stated she would like to see a budget breakdown listed on major travel applications. Jerry will include this in his call for application email. He will also bring a spreadsheet of past awardees to the November meeting. The committee will determine the cutoff at the November meeting.

  2. Excellence in Education Day - Friday, March 6, 2009, has been officially set aside as a non-instructional day for Excellence in Education Day. Jerry stated that at a recent Town Hall Meeting covering HCC's Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) data, Jerry suggested that an in-depth look at the data and professional development activities specified in the survey be covered during Ex in Ed. Erika Lacro is open to this. The current Wo Learning Champions, Shanon Miho and Kyle Higa, want to be involved with the Ex in Ed planning. Jerry will invite them to the November Faculty Development Committee meeting. As usual, it is hoped the Staff Development Committee will plan an excursion for the afternoon of the day.

  3. Native Hawaiian Professional Development Series - Jerry stated that Jonathan Wong has scheduled a large array of Technology Integration workshops and Laulima Development workshops for the fall. Jonathan recently asked Jerry if the Faculty Development Committee would want to co-sponsor these workshops. Jerry said, "Yes." The committee members agreed that funding for refreshments at the workshops is approved.

  4. Contract Renewal Application and Tenure/Promotion Dossier Samples - Jerry brought in all of the sample documents that are on file in the Library. Several are dated 2000. It was determined that all of these should be discarded. Samples for each step in the process are still included in the Library in addition to a generic Contract Renewal Application and a generic Tenure/Promotion Dossier, which were developed by Jerry and edited by all three tenured Librarians.
Open Discussion
  1. Jessica reminded the committee members she is still concerned about help and funding for the After-Graduation Party. This will be discussed at a later meeting.

  2. Guy stated that a College Christmas Party has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 17. The cafeteria and caterer is available on that day. He also stated that an effort will be made to get 100 HCC runners/walkers for the 2009 Great Aloha Run.

  3. Charlene stated there is an initiative in the planning stages for the 90th birthday of HCC in 2010. Led by Beng Poh Yoshikawa, part of this will be collections of oral histories from past graduates.

  4. Grace stated that faculty development initiatives have come up in a recent Recruitment and Retention (R & R) Committee meeting. The R & R Faculty Development Sub-Committee will work with the Faculty Development Committee in meeting the professional development needs of the faculty. Two identified topics include intergenerational learning and using technology in the classroom. Chris and Grace are on both committees so will keep each committee informed of initiatives.

  5. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 6, at 3:30 pm in a location TBA.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 pm.
