FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING October 16, 2001 11:30 am - Diesel Facility MINUTES Attending: Jerry Cerny, Keith Crockett, Lei Lani Hinds, Michel Kaiser, Xin Li, Paul Onomura, Edward Santa Elena, Alan Uyehara Not Attending: Michel Kaiser Guest: Frank Fenlon 1. Edward Santa Elena, Instructor, Commercial Aviation, has joined the committee. Edward was introduced to the rest of the committee members and welcomed. 2. An October Faculty Development Committee calendar of activities was distributed. 3. The minutes from the September 10 meeting were approved. Old Business 1. Jerry encouraged all committee members to sell their remaining Entertainment Books. The committee is over half way to its goal. 2. The draft of the Faculty Development Newsletter will be shared with all committee members soon. The final copy will be issued in a couple of weeks. Jerry asked all members to send colleague activities for the Faculty Spotlight information to him as soon as possible. 3. All committee members were asked to look at the Faculty Development web site, note any needed updates and corrections, and share these with Jerry. New Business 1. Jerry announced the following Faculty Development Committee activities: - Web page training-Vern Takebayashi and Rose Sumajit have volunteered to offer three two-hour workshops on web page development. The sessions will be for the next three Fridays, 12:30 - 2:30 pm in 2-606. This information has been shared with the faculty members and nearly 20 have signed up to attend. - Ron Takata suggested a visit to the Holulani Imaginarium at Windward CC be coordinated. Jerry has chatted with Lorry Suehiro, Staff Development Coordinator, and two visits may be planned. The cost of a visit is a $60 flat fee. The Faculty Development Committee has agreed to fund one visit. Jerry will schedule the visit and communicate the day and time to the campus. 2. The application for the Fall Professional Development Awards was finalized. Last year's form will be used with the dates changed to this year. The criteria for the awards are outlined on the application form. The deadline for application submission was set for Friday, November 2 at 4:30 pm. The award decisions will be made by the committee at the November meeting. 3. Jerry announced that Doric Little and Ron Takata have suggested a campus presentation by a Doctor from the UH Medical School who is tracing human DNA and has data pointing to a Mother Eve and the inhabitants of Rapanui (Easter Island). Doric will make the contact to schedule the presentation and Jerry will publicize. The committee agreed to pay the presenter a $100 honorarium for this presentation. Last year Dr. Gopal tried unsuccessfully to coordinate a presentation from a UH Hilo professor who is studying the new Hawaiian island growing underwater south of the Big Island. Jerry said that perhaps we could invite him to come to campus in the spring and pay him a $100 honorarium also 4. A Christmas Party committee meeting will be announced for next week and Jerry encouraged all committee members who want to participate in planning the HCC party to come to the meeting. He also stated that he has received a request to have an Octoberfest party. All agreed that things are too busy to have a social get together yet this month. Jerry suggested that a Noverberfest be held at the Marine Center in early November, which would include a short presentation by Brian Isaacson on home brewed beer. Jerry will do the coordination for this social get together. Paul stated that the last social gathering at the Marine Center included two jet skis and two boats. He volunteered to bring his jet ski again. 5. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 8, at 11:45 on the main campus in a location to be announced. 6.
