FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING November 2, 2005 3:00 pm - Library Study Room 113 MINUTES Attending: Jerry Cerny, Monir Hodges, Bernadette Howard, Femar Lee, Jeannie Shaw, Rona Wong and Lisa Yogi Guest: Sheryl Legaspi 1. The following handouts were distributed; - Committee Meeting Agenda - Calendar of November Faculty Development Activities - HGTS Teachers Seminar Follow-up Workshop flyer - Teachers Talking Seminar flyer - Career Access Training Session flyer Old Business 1. Fall Activities: Jerry stated that the first "Lunch and Learn" Workshop, Great Customer Service by Nicole Bremness, will be held tomorrow at 12:00 noon in 2-241. He also mentioned the upcoming Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar Teachers Talking and an open discussion Teachers Talking Seminar. Lorrie Cahill, Career Readiness and Job Placement Center Coordinator, is presenting a Career Access Training Session on December 2. Faculty Development is co-sponsoring. Rona stated that she has viewed the Career Access website and there are many very practical topics for students on it. Jerry also mentioned that Leon Florendo is unavailable to offer a True Colors Workshop this fall but would be able to do one in the spring. 2. Faculty Development Newsletter: Jerry stated that the fall issue of the Newsletter has been distributed and posted on the Faculty Development Website. Rona stated that Silvan Chung wants to write an article on career counseling for the spring issue. Jerry encouraged other member to think about writing an article addressing Faculty Development for the spring issue also. 3. Perkins Leadership Professional Development Awards: Bernadette summarized HCC Perkins Fund activities. We have received funding to send one faculty member to the League for Innovation 2006 Innovations Conference in Atlanta in March and one faculty member to a Skip Downing On Course II Workshop in California in April. Jerry will email this information to faculty-l and solicit volunteers. The same procedures that are used to award campus Faculty Professional Development Funds will be used to select HCC's attendees to these two professional development activities. Jerry also stated that he is chair of a UHCC System Perkins Professional Development Committee, which had planned and coordinated Perkins funded activities over the past two years. The committee has no set-aside money this year, however, the committee members are meeting in December to investigate the possibility of pooling campus money for a system-wide activity. Bernadette shared that HCC is also receiving Perkins funds for several program faculty members to receive Palm Pilots to track student progress on SLOs/course tasks from the lab/shop floor. 4. Entertainment Book sales: Thirty-five Entertainment books have been sold. Those with books remaining were encouraged to finalize the sales soon so this fundraiser can be completed by December 1 at the latest. 5. Holiday Party: Guy Shibayama is leading the effort to organize an HCC/ATCAH Christmas Party in the Cafeteria on December 2. Jerry stated he will email Guy informing him the Faculty Development Committee members would be willing to help and ask where help is needed. New Business 1. Foundation Account: The committee members agreed to fund a lei and light refreshments for the "Lunch and Learn" presentation tomorrow. 2. Spring Activities: Lisa, Monir and Jeannie will continue to plan activities for the spring semester. Sheryl stated that although folks from Leeward Community College suggested having a system-wide WILD day in March, the Wo Learning Champions discussed this and agreed that this WILD will be held on individual campuses. The major problem with a joint day is funding to support neighbor island travel. She stated that Louise Pagotto suggested that perhaps in the future polycomm meetings could be organized for each discipline. Sheryl summarized the plans for HCC's WILD: 8:00 Welcome and open activity - inspirational video, perhaps one by Ben Zandor 8:30 Breakouts - Tech Strand and Health and Wellness Strand 10:00 Breakouts 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Afternoon excursion Ideas: Health and Wellness visits to areas hospitals Working trip to Gary Gill's environmental site in Kalihi Valley Repeat Royal Mausoleum/Pali Lookout Sheryl asked for additional afternoon excursion ideas. Food for WILD was discussed. Sheryl stated that Wo will provide $595 to HCC for WILD and we will charge a $5 registration fee for those attending. Lisa suggested that Sheryl contact Starbucks or Lion Coffee to see if either would donate coffee for the morning continental breakfast. 3. Professional Development Awards: Two applications were received for Faculty Professional Development funds this semester. One is from Bob Vericker for travel to a Mainland conference in the spring. The members agreed to defer this application to the spring semester when it will be evaluated with the other "major travel" applications. The committee members also agreed to only go back to the Fall 2003 semester for eligibility for receiving funds this year. Jerry reminded all that the maximum limit for awards was raised to $1200 during the Spring 2005 semester. Milton Tadaki submitted an application for funds for I-CAR training in the spring. He was awarded $450 to attend five training sessions next spring. Jerry will notify him and also the Fiscal Office so the funds can be transferred into the ABRP account. Open Discussion 1. Jerry stated that Pat Patterson informed him that he has to resign from the Faculty Development Committee due to being too stretched time-wise this year. Jerry asked all to solicit a replacement from our University College colleagues as paths cross on campus. The next meeting is scheduled for a Thursday, January 19, 3:00 pm, location TBA. Jerry told Sheryl that if the WILD Day needs attention that could not be handled via email, a special meeting could be held.
