Handouts

Old Business

  1. Entertainment Book Fundraiser - Jerry stated that the fundraiser is over. Steven Chu from Auto Body sold the last five books. He was on the Faculty Development Committee several years ago and still sells books for the Committee. Thirty-nine books were sold and one will be given to Guy Shibayama who will use it as a door prize at the upcoming HCC Christmas Party. Jerry thanked everyone for contributing to the efforts of this fundraiser.

  2. Chicken Sales Fundraiser - Jerry reported that 50th State Poultry Processors, Inc., conducted two chicken sales on campus on August 29 and October 3. Ken Kato allows Faculty Development to sponsor a chicken sales event once a quarter. The Faculty Development cut of the sales was $300 and the company donated another $300 for a total of $600. Additional chicken sales will be held during the Jan-Feb-Mar and Apr-May-Jun quarters.
New Business

  1. Fall Activities - The follow are activities which will be offered yet during the fall semester:

  2. UH Foundation Account - Jerry distributed a Faculty Development UH Foundation Account Statement. The current balance is $4801.61. Grace Funai has requested that $250 be donated to the High School to HCC Day Committee for lunches for faculty and staff after the upcoming event. The Committee members unanimously agreed.

  3. Faculty Professional Development Fund Awards - Jerry stated that no applications were submitted this fall. The $10,000 will be awarded in the spring to applicants and for two slots to the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar. Monir stated that perhaps there were no applications because faculty members do not have the money to pay to attend an activity and then seek reimbursement from this money. Jerry stated he suggests to colleagues to try to get department or other accounts to front the money with a reimbursement to follow. Jerry anticipates significant applications in the spring.

  4. Excellence in Aloha Day - March 4, 2011 - Jerry stated this event will take place on Friday, March 4, 2011. Last year was a Wo Innovation in Learning Day (WILD) with most of the planning and coordination of the day being done by the Wo Learning Champions (WLC). 2011 will be an Excellence in Education Day (changed to Excellence in Aloha Day here at HCC in 2009) with the Faculty and Staff Development Committees and former WLCs doing the planning and coordination for the day. Jerry asked the members to think about ideas for the day and planning will commence in January. He also stated he would talk to Erika to see if there are any plans from Administration for the day.

  5. There will be no December meeting unless a need arises.
Open Discussion

  1. Cyndi reported that Iris Saito has been very busy and will offer a puppet making workshop in the spring when she has a reduced teaching load. She also stated that Eva Moravcik does not teach on-line courses but still wants to use Laulima. She requests a workshop to help her and other faculty with Laulima. Jerry said he would ask Jonathan Wong to facilitate a workshop. It was also suggested Vern Takebayashi could teach one. Steve said that Laulima has changed with displaying and using tools such as Mail and Drop Box are not the same as they have been.

  2. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 7 at 10:00 am again in the Library.

Adjourn

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 am.
