Tutoring/Coaching

Through faculty and staff referrals, each of our Peer tutors/coaches have been interviewed and selected by the TRIO-SSS professional staff. In addition, they have been trained and have been found competent to provide effective assistance to our program participants.

The Tutoring/Coaching Program has been designed to, guide and assist students with a particular subject or field of study, provide on going support, advice and encouragement, and share experiences that will assist students in their overall development. This service represents an important form of instruction that impacts students who are not only struggling with the academic and personal demands of college but to also encourage students to maintain, and stay on top of the demands to ensure good academic standings.

Furthermore, one of our greatest goals is to help students become independent learners. Our Peer Tutors are, not an information or answer dispenser. Students need to understand and be reminded that they are responsible for their own learning. It is the student's responsibility to attend classes regularly, do the assigned work, projects, and readings.

These services are available during the Fall, Spring and Summer Sessions during TRIO-SSS normal working hours:

Monday through Friday (8:00 AM - 4:30PM)
Except for Weekends, Institutional Holidays, and Winter Break

Karen Jones

Karen Jones

Aloha, everyone, my name is Karen Jones. After many years of raising my family on the island of Maui, I am back in school. I am a non-traditional student here at Honolulu Community College and currently working towards my associate's degree in Liberal Arts. Additionally, I am also working towards earning my certification in COSAC Substance Abuse Counseling. I started school using the services at TRIO-SSS from day one. I give credit to the TRIO-SSS program and the TRIO-SSS staff in helping me succeed in all my studies and more. I started as a student office assistance last year and am now working as a peer coach. I will do my best to help you with what you need so you can also succeed in your college journey. If I am not able to assist you I will help you find the person that can. No matter what we are here to assist you to become the best student you can be. We have a lot of fun and laughter while we are supporting you. Never feel afraid to ask for help; that is what we are about!

Kristie Talaro

Kristie Talaro

Hey everyone, my name is Kristie, and I am a Peer Coach for the TRIO-SSS program. I am a non-traditional student here at HCC, and a single mother of two kids, one currently attending college in Arizona and another one currently in middle school. If I can do this so can you! I am currently working towards my associate's degree in Liberal Arts and will be graduating in the fall of 2020. I also plan on further pursuing my education at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, working towards my Bachelor's degree in Social Work. Deciding to come back to school was a very frightening experience for me so I understand all the anxieties that one might have during that first semester, but I also know that with time these feelings will pass. Surrounding yourself with a good support system is very important at this time, and here at TRIO-SSS, there are alot of friendly people who are willing to be just that. So come on in and ask for Kristie, don't be shame, I am more than willing to help you with anything that you need. And if I don't have the answer to your questions, together, I can guarantee you that we will find someone that does!
