Internship Information for Employers

Are you interested in building a pipeline for up and coming talent within your industry? Offering an internship for Honolulu Community College students is a great way to network, build company awareness and offer on-the-job training to incoming entry level workers.

What is an Internship?

  • A short-term employment opportunity (usually 3-6 months)
  • Allows students to apply classroom learning to a real life work environment

  • Create a relationship with HonCC and a better understanding of programs
  • Provide mentorship to up and coming workforce that can positively impact the industry
  • Start/End date: The internship has a definite start and end date that is mutually agreed upon.
  • Learning Objectives/Goals: The internship has clearly defined learning objectives/goals that aligns with the student’s academic program goals.
  • Responsibilities/Expectations: The internship job description has clear responsibilities and desired qualifications
  • Projects/tasks: The internship requires the intern to apply knowledge from the classroom to a real-world work environment.
  • Transferable Skills: The internship provides students an opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge that are transferable to other employment settings.
  • Identify an Intern Supervisor: Identify a professional who will be the direct supervisor for the intern that has relevant expertise and educational experience.
    • The direct supervisor should provide feedback, guidance and ensures that the intern has the appropriate resources, training and equipment to successfully complete the assignment.
  • Training/Professional Development: The internship should provide appropriate onboarding training and opportunities for professional development.
  • Program Structure: The internship program should have adequate program structure to provide the intern opportunities to learn various aspects of the company, network with other professionals and interns (if applicable), reflect on self progress development and receive feedback/guidance.

Yes, the majority of internships are paid or provide a stipend. We highly encourage all employers to
offer paid internships as many of our students have to work while they are enrolled in classes.

It varies depending on the program. Many factors can impact when students find internships
including course scheduling and requirements, and personal reasons.
