If you’ve always been interested in the criminal justice system, this program is designed just for you.

About the Program

Our Administration of Justice (AJ) program will provide you with a comprehensive education in the study of the criminal justice process, including law enforcement, the court system, and corrections. You’ll learn the causes and effects of crime and delinquency, law enforcement procedures, such as securing a crime scene, gathering evidence and providing testimony, and balancing individual rights with the protection of society.

You’ll be taught by our Administration of Justice faculty members, who have real-world experience as FBI agents, police officers, and attorneys. You’ll also be able to network and learn from classmates who work in various law enforcement positions, including police officers, deputy sheriffs, military police, corrections officers, and security officers.

Our Administration of Justice program also has articulation agreements with the other University of Hawai‘i (UH) campuses. This means if you choose to transfer to another UH campus to earn a bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice or a related field, the transition will be smooth and easy.

Some of our Administration of Justice courses are offered through distance education (on-line). However, the hands-on courses are offered in-person.

Thinking Skills

General

Apply criminal justice theories and critical thinking skills to resolve issues common to the field.

Specific
  • Read and follow procedures outlined in lectures, textbooks, handouts and legal documents.
  • Memorize laws and legal procedures.
  • Apply basic principles of criminal investigation.
  • Define and classify crimes.
  • Conduct basic legal research.

Use sensory cues to make accurate observations and assessments of a crime scene.

  • Survey a scene and gather physical evidence.
  • Detect subtle clues in an investigation.
  • Examine evidence such as fingerprints, casts, photographs, and lab reports.

Travel to various sites to do research.

  • Visit off-campus sites such as the Federal Building, courthouses, and State Library to access public records, reference materials, or other resources.
  • Attend a court session.

Communication Skills

General

Communicate effectively to gather and convey information.

Specific
  • Conduct interviews to obtain necessary information.
  • Express information coherently.
  • Prepare accurate and concise judicial system reports.

Behavioral Skills

General

Behave appropriately in a shared learning environment.

  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Work cooperatively with partners and groups.
  • Follow through with individual and shared responsibilities.

Environmental Tolerance

Function safely in a typical classroom environment.

Work for prolonged periods amidst: Artificial lighting, Air conditioning, Dust and odors, Residue from cleaning products

In addition to the Tuition, other costs include:

  • Textbooks: Approximately $400 per semester.

Students who complete 12 units of Administration of Justice work may receive up to 12 additional units for completing Basic Recruit Training in law enforcement or corrections, as required by governmental agencies:

  • Basic Recruit Training (e.g., Corrections) graduating with a minimum of 250 hours of training – 6 credits.
  • Basic Recruit Training (e.g., DPS – Law Enforcement) graduating with a minimum of 500 hours of training – 9 credits.
