Fashion is a highly dynamic, exciting, and growing industry. This program is “designed” to give you the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in this field.

About the Program

In our Fashion Technology (FT) program, you’ll learn the basics of clothing construction, industrial sewing, pattern making, textiles, textile art, fashion sketching and design, computerized grading, and marker making. You’ll learn through both instructional theory and hands-on practical projects. Then, once you’ve mastered the fashion design and production techniques, you’ll advance to the high-tech equipment and software used in developing patterns.

This is the only Fashion Technology program of its kind on O‘ahu. Many of Hawai‘i’s top fashion designers were once students in this program. The Fashion Technology program also hosts an annual Fashion Show, where you’ll have an opportunity to showcase your talent and creativity. This highly-anticipated catwalk event is attended by industry professionals and the media.

Fashion Technology can be an exceptional and rewarding career. There are also some unique aspects of the profession and important skills that will help you be successful in this field, including sufficient mobility and dexterity to do design work.

Technical Standards

Technical Standards describe some of the essential mental, physical, and behavioral skills that are necessary for successful participation in and completion of courses in this curriculum.

Thinking Skills

General

Apply principles, concepts, and procedures for industry standard fashion production and retail.

Specific
  • Read textbooks and handouts.
  • Read commercial patterns and instructions.
  • Recognize industry terminology.
  • Identify design, color, and printing techniques used in textiles.
  • Classify fibers and fabrics.
  • Conduct simple physical and chemical tests of fabrics.
  • Apply color theory.
  • Differentiate uses of tools, techniques, computer hardware and software.
  • Identify appropriate materials and methods for specific designs.
  • Do problem solving for design-related needs.
  • Take measurements and do conversions.
  • Do basic math calculations.
  • Perform standard design and construction techniques.
  • Employ computer technology for grading and marking patterns.
  • Integrate all phases of apparel production to create garments for customers.

  • Translate design sketches into flat patterns.
  • Create and assess designs on a computer.
  • Replicate teacher-demonstrated procedures.
  • Select appropriate materials and methods to achieve target effect.
  • Distinguish slight differences in colors, shapes, and patterns.

  • Detect details in fitting.

Motor Skills

General

Possess sufficient mobility and dexterity to do design work.

Specific
  • Sketch lines, shapes, and figures.
  • Measure, place, and otherwise maneuver fabrics and materials.
  • Manipulate sewing tools such as scissors, pins and needles.
  • Cut and drape fabrics.
  • Execute computer commands and operations to draft, grade, and mark patterns.
  • Lift and transport equipment and materials as necessary.
  • Operate power equipment such as round and straight edge knives, sewing machines and sergers.

Communication Skills

General

Communicate effectively to gather and convey information.

  • Obtain necessary information from oral and written sources.

Behavioral Skills

Behave appropriately in both self-directed and shared learning environments.

Environmental Tolerance

General

Function safely in a fashion technology lab.

Specific

Work for prolonged periods amidst: Extreme noise, Sharp tools and materials, Electrical equipment, Chemicals and toxins, Dust, Machinery with moving parts, Artificial lighting

In addition to the Tuition, other costs include:

  • Textbooks: Approximately $200 – $500 per semester.
  • Supplies: Approximately $300 – $500 per semester.
  1. Apply to Honolulu Community College.
  2. Recommended: Daily access to a working sewing machine. The Fashion Technology program currently uses the Bernina #1008 model in our sewing laboratory.
