Do you enjoy working with your hands, or building and fixing things? If so, our Carpentry Technology program could be just what you’re looking for.

About the Program

Our Carpentry Technology (CARP) program is designed to provide you with entry-level knowledge and hands-on skills that will put you on a path toward a meaningful and rewarding career in the building and construction industry. Upon completion of our CARP program, you’ll be ready to enter the Carpenters Apprenticeship Program, which is the most common way to enter the carpentry field.

The classroom hours you complete in this program also count towards your journey worker hours. In addition to learning carpentry skills, our program also focuses on personal and professional health, fitness, and safety practices required for building and construction occupations.

The class will be held in-person and, depending on lab space, may be split into two groups to meet the six-feet social distancing requirements. You will be responsible to come to campus during your assigned lab time.

Your instructor will provide a list of tools, books, etc. during the first week of the semester.

Be sure to attend the first day of instruction for information on attire, tools, and books that will be required. Instructors take attendance at the beginning of class, so please be on time.  If you are absent or tardy, please email your instructors to schedule time to make up the work missed.

Apply proper principles and techniques to carpentry and construction projects.

Specific
  • Read textbooks, handouts, and safety procedures.
  • Read blueprints and construction plans.
  • Interpret symbols, legends, and other information on construction drawings.
  • Extract information from a set of construction drawings.
  • Do mathematical calculations.
  • Take accurate measurements and do conversions.
  • Estimate the amount of materials and labor needed for a project.
  • Visualize two and three-dimensional objects.

Assess the quality of carpentry and construction work.

  • Determine readings on devices such as tape measures, framing and adjustable squares, and builders’ levels and transits.
  • Select proper tools and materials for specific purposes.
  • Use sensory cues to do proper constructing, installing, and finishing work.
  • Judge distance and space relationships of objects.

Possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, flexibility, and dexterity to do carpentry and construction work.

  • Operate necessary tools and equipment properly.

Work for prolonged periods amidst: Extreme noise, Sharp tools and materials, Electrical equipment, Chemicals and toxins, Dust, heat, and fumes, Machinery with moving parts, Moving objects and vehicles, Slippery or uneven surfaces, Variations in lighting

In addition to the Tuition, other costs include:

  •  Textbooks/Tools: Approximately $460 for the first year and $50 for each succeeding year.

  2. Prerequisite: Placement into ENG 100. MATH 50, or Placement into MATH 150 or higher.
