Tutoring Center

The Tutoring Center at Honolulu Community College is dedicated to student success. We offer quality tutoring services, academic support, and supplemental instruction that will set a foundation for building essential study habits and promoting lifelong learning. We offer tutoring services for the following subjects (Not limited to): MATH 24-244, PHYS 100-274, CHEM 100-162, ENG 100, and CTE related courses.

Hours & Location

  • The Tutoring Center is located on the first floor of Building 7 (Library/Learning Commons).
  • Monday – Friday (8:00am – 4:30pm)

How to Make an Appointment

  • Walk in appointments are available during hours of operation.
  • Online tutoring is available upon request and availability.
  • Please contact the Tutoring Department for online tutoring requests and any other inquiries.

Math Lab

Having difficulty learning math? Seek early tutoring assistance in The Math Lab. You can save hours of time and frustration and be more successful in mathematics if you ask for assistance.

Hours & Location

By Appointment Only:

In-Person, Drop-In:

  • Monday-Thursdays 11:30am – 4:00pm
  • Fridays 8:00am – 1:00pm

Phone Policy

  • Phones must be turned off or set to silent mode
  • Exit before making or answering a phone call (conduct all cell phone conversations outside)
  • Patrons wishing to report bothersome phone use should contact any Math Lab staff member

Tutoring

  • Tutoring is offered, free of charge by appointment only. Email: gtengan@hawaii.edu to make an appointment.
  • The Math Lab tutoring is not a replacement for attending class or instructor consultation.
  • Tutors can assist with odd-numbered textbook problems and ordinary computerized homework but will not assist with problems that will be turned in for grading without specific instructor approval of such assistance. When there is any doubt, tutors will refer student questions to their respective instructors.

Environment

  • The Math Lab is a working lab so ongoing and active tutoring and discussion of MATH topics, procedures, and problems is expected.
  • Discussion of other topics should be kept quiet and brief to help maintain an atmosphere conducive to the study and learning of mathematics.
  • Overly energetic (loud) discussions of any sort should be taken outside of the Math Lab so as not to disturb others who are studying.
  • As a courtesy to others, please do not bring children to the Math Lab.

The Math Lab reserves the right to require disruptive individuals to leave the Math Lab.

Requesting an Appointment

Please request an appointment by 3:30pm for the next working day. To request an appointment please email gtengan@hawaii.edu

With subject line: Math Tutor

Please send:

1) HCC Math Course / Instructor

2) Top 3 appt. times in order of preference (Ex. 3pm, 2pm, or 11am)

3) (optional) The topic or type of problems you want to work on.

You will receive a reply with the closest available appt. time to your request. For virtual/online meetings your ZOOM meeting ID will be emailed prior to your appointment. All in-person meetings will be held in the Mathlab Rm. 7-421.

Joining Zoom for an Appointment

In your email, Click on the invitation or go to www.zoom.us, Click join a meeting.

Enter your ZOOM ID number and password

In the “name” box enter your HCC email address as your “name”

You will be put into a “Waiting Room” while we verify you are an HCC student.

Policies

Math Tutors will only assist with HCC math course topics.

Each session will last a maximum 55 minutes and may be recorded.

Students should have questions prepared ahead of time.

Tutors will not assist with quizzes or exam questions.

Limit one appointment per day.

We reserve the right to end a meeting at any time for any reason.

Normal Mathlab policies as well as UH System Student Conduct Code Apply.

How to Study Math – This site will provide tips on how to be a better math student. It includes tips on how to study for and take math exams.

Time Management – Time management skills will help you find freedom from deadline pressure and increase your productivity and relaxation time.

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) – A web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what you know and areas you need more help. ALEKS then instructs you on the topics you are most ready to learn.

MyMathLab – A series of online courses that accompany Pearson’s textbooks in mathematics and statistics. MyMathLab engages you in active learning – it’s modular, self-paced, accessible anywhere with Web access, and adaptable to your learning style.

Writing Center

The Honolulu Community College Writing Center is open to students, staff, and faculty. We provide writing assistance for all phases of the writing process and for all class writing assignments. Our tutors/consultants are primarily students, and they are trained in all aspects of collaborative writing. The Writing Center assesses its performance through session reports and formal observation, and welcomes any and all suggestions so that we can serve our campus even more effectively.
